Why would a seed split and then die.

I have a question for those with more knowledge on popping seeds. I use the paper towel method, and have had great success, usually 100% Lately i have had some seeds split and show a tail, then die. Usually they are the stubborn ones that take 2 days or more to split. When they die, it seems the tail barely pops out about 1/16", and then they just stop. Usually there is a little dark area on the tail, where the good ones are pure white. If the seed was bad, i would think it wouldn't even split, so I'm thinking maybe its me? Maybe the towel is too saturated/not enough oxygen?

2 reasons "pop" directly into mind.

1: The seed is old and/or not stored well. It's weak and only has enough stored "energy" to pop. It finds 0 nutrition to carry it and it dies.
1A: Crappy seed dealer with old stock
SOLUTION: Germinate directly in good ORGANIC soil. This allows some of those "boarder line" seeds to make it.
1A: Change seed supplier.

2: You have a seedling heat mat under your popping container and it's TOO HOT!
SOLUTION: Put a towel folded over on the mat and then the popping container on the towel.

Thanks for the insight. The seeds are fresh, same breeder (exotic genetix), same drop (most recent). I just found it weird that i put three banana cream and three pink 2.0 in different paper towels, but same ziplock bag, same time. I put this on my wireless router with a 1" thick hollow plastic container in between, so it's just warm to the touch. The 3 bananas had 2 inch tails(practically shedding their shells) within 36 hours, while only one pink had a 1/2" tail, one cracked as i described, and the other one cracked two days later, just like i described. My paper towel was still soaked 4 days later, so i thought maybe too much moisture(or not enough oxygen) as the bananas were closer to the mouth of the ziplock. Overall 4 for 6, but I'm used to 100%. (but the same thing has happened before, different breeder) I guess its just genetics, but i just wanted to make sure it wasn't me. I can't do soil, I'm ebb and flow hydro, recently converting everything to coco. Soil just doesn't work for me, i am a control freak....i need to know what's going on.

There are 3 distinct phases of germination that anyone who trials the days of 101 horticulture will learn only too quickly

the first is the soak ..of which you have achieved

the second is the imbibition (the soak up)also you have done well

the third phase embryo initiation, cells should be expanding at a fantastic rate if not...? look to your temperatures and humidity

as its here that poorly stored seeds show their worst, if you're brave attempt to peel off one side of the shell, but ensure that it has swollen first and cracked

should you continue to have this issues change seed banks and avoid buying up market seeds, they are up market cause no one buys them ..hence they dry out

best it to use a natural surfactant on your first phase of germing, like aloe vera or even a tin pinch of aspirin (1/4tab to 8 usgallons)

good luck

It's the seeds
Unethical dealer of old or bad storage seeds

One strain did one strain didn't and same breeder - dead giveaway.

Control freak - that don't mean you can't control soil! Build your own - I do.
Any way - add a little Clonex solution or GH rapid start in that water you pop with for that nutrition the thing is looking for....
