Will They Survive?

Just curious…. BC outdoor grow. Odds of my girls surviving a full 7 days of overnight lows in the 3-1C(37-33F)? There rain mixed in with the lows. Daytimes still low double digits. There sun mixed in there as well. This is upcoming forecast. I get it can be off a bit. Just want to prepare if I have too. Figure some of you have grown, and faced these temps. Thanks.
I should add harvest is anywhere from 1 week away for 1 plant. Upwards of 5 weeks yet for my furthest away. The other 4 fall in between somewhere.

Worse case, if it gets well below freezing (-5 to -10) is the freeze will defoliate for you. But the buds will be fine.

Me, I’d try to ride it out. Some varieties can take the cold pretty well. Strawberry farmers will spray water on their plants right around dawn on nights that are in that temp range. I saw it on the news one day. I’m not so sure about the science behind it. I gave it a shot last fall, but it was hard to tell if it helped or not, my plants were damaged from high winds.

Thanks. Is that Celsius? No way we’re getting that low…..yet. But good to know the buds can survive that. I’m defoliating on a daily basis at this point. Anything to keep that wind able to blow through, and sun on the buds.

Thanks. I’ll ride it out for sure. That time of year, I’m guessing those lows will be here to stay. Not far to the finish line. Just need the mold to stay away. So far so good. Lots of rain today though. I’m out there shaking them off every hour. Lol

Yes C.

This is a swazi that was harvested end of November (eastern Ontario).

This one had snow on it mid December. Leaves took a right beating, but the buds were beautiful.

This is a mid December GG4. I let the popcorn stay on the branches in the hopes that they would Rhodelize. It did so I got nice female pollen from it. Oh, and the little buds were awesome. lol

That is crazy. I totally did not think survival once freezing sets in. So I guess below zero is really only a factor in veg? The buds will continue to ripen with below 0C temps? Or are you saying it just won’t kill the buds, but further ripening will be halted? Either way imma ride this out as long as humidity doesn’t introduce mold. Thanks for easing my mind. I though I was going to have to construct something.

So when you read the other threads, is it just mid information or am I missing something? People talking about Trichomes freezing, falling of the plant. Degrading etc?

Let us know how it ends up!

Correct. Other than ripening and oxidizing trichomes, flower growth would be pretty slow if it doesn't stop completely.

Ok. Gotcha. So you get the big freeze below zero temps only thing stopping from harvesting is ripening of trichomes, as buds aren’t going to grow any longer. I can work with that.

Been raining good here 12hrs straight. Just had to stake up and support as branches bending under the weight of the bud with rain. Losing sleep everytime I get rain, as I’ve completely avoided any bud rot on all 6 of my girls. This one is so close I’m thinking of chopping Sunday. Well forecast has changed again. -2 on Wednesday overnight lows, and steady zero for the foreseeable future overnight. If it was just ripening trichomes I wouldn’t worry. But I’ve got 6 plants. 3 are close. 3 have weeks. So I guess I’m screwed. Sad day seeing the temp outlook.

They can withstand a lot more than most people realize, of course some strains better than others.
If you’ve got 3 that are close at least you’ll be successful with half of them.

Thanks man. Yes. I know I’m good for 3. But I’m going to construct this canopy and look for something to keep the ground/roots warm. Hate to lose the other 3.

Hey I see you pulled some down as I was stalking you on a more recent thread. Did you pull half or all of them with that impending rain??

Neither. Lol. I’ve only harvested 1 of the 6 as it was truly the only one ready. It’s day 3 of drying. Just trying to dial in the room. The canopy frame and tarp worked to keep rain off the girls. And the other 5 continue to ripen nicely. I should have my next one ready to harvest in a weak. The third a few days later hopefully. Than 3 that still have 2-3 weeks. I’m really pushing for full completion. I’m keeping the rain away. But can’t help the temps. Hit 0C last night overnight. No issues. So very optimistic I’ll get there.

Great job! You have some harsh Ass conditions and seems like you have maximized your chances. I learned a lot from your thread.
