Will this work?

I want to save the genetics of this strain I am growing but am about to harvest. Instead of taking a clone or two, I was planning on chopping the plants just above their bottom shoots, which have little or no useable bud on them. Then, throw that back into veg and wait 6 weeks for new growth again.

Will this work, or should I take some clones and re-veg them? Any help is appreciated. Shitty diagram included below...

I've heard of plants regenerating after being harvested but I don't think there is a very high success rate. I'd go with cloning to be on the safe side.

I think you'd have better luck saving the strain, using your idea to reveg the whole plant. The fact that it has a nice strong root system, will help it reveg faster, and pretty much guarantee that it will survive. If you cut clones that late in bloom, it'll take a looooong time for them to take rooot, if they survive at all. You might lose most of them. If you reveg the bottom section on the mature plant, you can wait til it reverts, then take clones from that.(then stick what's left of it, in bloom) That depends on how many plants you are looking for.

He is absolutely right. I have revegged before, and it worked out great! Clones Galore :-P... even flowered em out again after a bunch of foliage grew back. Simple Simon :hump:

Thanks for the confirmation. I may have posted in the newbie section, but I know enough from luring and experience by now to know that it would be realllllllly tough to clone a plant so late in bloom, especially since the shoots are so weak. Hopefully, it will reveg enough for me to take some clones.

Thanks again. RIU rocks

i agree... re veg...it's gonna take a while for new growth but then you can clone when it gets new growth...thats a lot of shock to grow new roots and switch back to veg....stick with the roots you got.... But it's gonna be a while !

I would guess 6 weeks or so before new vegetative growth really starts again. The only negative will be how much room the container takes up in my veg layer in the meantime. Small price to pay though, I think this strain is some type of NL, not sure what # or cross.
