Windburn, Sunburn, or Pest? (Outdoor) - Pics Included

Some of my plants have been getting stripped down to the veins and I can not figure out why. I have only noticed one pest, which looked very similar to a japanese beetle, but the whole body was a copper-color, as opposed to just the wings. It crawled up the stalk of the plant, onto a leaf, appeared to "hug" the leaf without eating anything then climbed down and went along his business..

We have VERY strong winds here with lots of dust storms. Before I moved here, my friend told me to make sure to get a garage, because the wind/dust storms can litterally strip the paint off your vehicle and make it look like someone sand-blasted it.

With this in mind, I would assume it is the wind/dust being blown around?

We also have had 90-100 degree days on a regular basis with full sun almost every day. I had a hard time getting watering down due to being use to indoor, but now that I am getting the hang out it they seem much happier.

The ones in the ground seem to handle everything much better.

TO SUM UP:

• Very strong winds with lots of dust/dirt being blown around
• Used Azamax/Neem oil once/week or after it rains
• Lots of heat/Intense sunlight (90-100 degrees @ 5K feet elevation w/full sun almost every day)t
• Only noticed one bug which looked similar to japanese beetles, but all copper. (Didn't have camera with me )
• Ones in ground seem to handle much better, the one in a container/tomato cage seems to be effected the most so far
• Some nute deficiencies which i'm working on correcting now

This is the on in the ground (same strain as the last) which seems much healthier to me.

What time during the day did you apply the neem oil?

Last plant is decent, to me it looks possible that it could be heat stress. But I'm not 100 P on that..

TO SUM UP:
q: Very strong winds with lots of dust/dirt being blown around?
a: You have your plants in a very big box, remove some of the walling replace with horticulture cloth to allow wind to partialy blow thru it, to reduce the wind effects,

q: Used Azamax/Neem oil once/week or after it rains?
a: Similar to you ..I apply Neem OIl 2-3 times per week plus 1x teaspoon per each watering to the water Neem is systemic!

q:Lots of heat/Intense sunlight (90-100 degrees @ 5K feet elevation w/full sun almost every day)?
a: Look to the Aussie style of growing, water at 8:00am and 4:00pm daily, offer some shade at peak temp. times, have a breeze way thru your crop, over 86f plant goes dormant.

a: Looks like a caterpillar invasion, more Neem Req'd, as above add to water at each watering, you won't taste it in the bud.

a: I'd move the plants in the pots to a well nuted hole in the ground, tease out roots, as I suspect root bound, use more peat moss than normal it will hold more water

I was trying to say that should the OP remove the wood fence and use Horticultural cloth, it would allow the wind thru, and NOT loose so much water each day to the wind, like the wind blows over the wall it actually sucks the water out of the ground ..let the wind thru, plants bend but water is still their!

-Referring to the raised bed-type of thing I put around the in-ground ones? It is only a couple of inches high, should I build boxes to put around them with horticulture/shade cloth that allows wind to partially blow through and use during very windy days + very hot days?

-Really good to know about mixing in with watering! Do you ever add any sticking agent with the neem?

-Awesome. It's taken me a while to get the hang of watering them so really appreciate this.
I have also been chilling my water in the fridge for those hot days. Think this would help out or be detrimental? I thought how we love a cold drink on hot days so would imagine the same with them?

-Once again, thank you for this advice. I haven't seen caterpillars, but that was my first thought considering how many f*ing moths we've had. It's crazy.

-So you would move them to a hole that I dig out then refill with good soil like roots organics like I did with my other two? They are def. doing much better this way. Awesome advice on the peat, thanks I hadn't thought of that.

-With larger plants like this, should I bump up the ppm on feedings, or just feed more often, following the feeding schedule? I've never had plants this size and they have been deficient a lot of their mature lives.

Thanks man, I REALLY appreciate the help! First time growing outdoor so I feel sort of clueless as what to do to an extent so you have no idea how much I appreciate it!

I thought about making a shade house out of lattus or some type of shade cloth to put the container plants in so I could have more control + protection & possibly do light deprivation to get the harvest in before rippers are out looking.. Thoughts on this?

Hahah that's for sure man! Def. very deserty. All kinds of lizards/scorpions/cactus's, etc.

I applied the neem oil at night/very late evenings when the sun was all the way down and temperatures dropped. I was afraid if applying during the day itd burn the piss out of them?

I think there is some heat stress involved I would have to agree, especially when I first put them outside because I didn't have the chance to acclimate them, so they were very stressed out until acclimated, but seem to be growing now.

Thank you for confirming the heat stress. This is new to me so kind of a guessing game based off the limited knowledge I have growing indoors.

Oh and V, I commented questions/responses on your post in the quote

If a caterpillar infestation, should they be pretty noticeable? I just looked over the plant and have not seen one so far, but don't doubt they are there.. I also haven't seen any leaves with holes in them, it looks just straight ripped off.. Which is why I wondered if wind/dust could have done this to her, or only some type of pest?

It also seems weird to me that the in-ground plants are not effected like the container plants (as far as leaves getting stripped off only leaving the vein) Maybe just quincedence? Or something to do with the nutes/size of the container as you mentioned it probably needs to be transplanted?

Could be the access to cool water at the roots for the roots underground.

Yeah just keep at er you'll make it! Lol not sure about the wind or pests can't see either lol.

So that could be the cause of my issues? Which would be why the in-ground ones are handling it better? Thanks for the much-needed encouragement! Haha thanks man. I really haven't seen any pest, I keep inspecting them several times a day, but none yet I can see except one mentioned. Wind is terrible.

I was trying to build protective structures for them today to protect from dust storms & hail, then right as I was finishing up my second one a huge dust storm came through. I thought it was like a tornado or something at first lol the plants looked like they were dancing out there bouncing side to side

Only thing I coukd add I think the dmg to your leaves is the tomato cage the wibd is smashing your plants against it

If it helps, I had the same issue with too strong a fan in a small tent...
Seems that where you're at would be a good site for a bunker

I didn't know this. I was thinking it would help with water loss/hopefuly help with bugs coming in & it's nice to still sort of have a container-like feel to my in-ground plants. Thanks for the help brother! Oh and by the way, good call on the root bound plant. It was just starting to get root bound, although the roots still looked surprisingly healthy.

I transplanted to a 20g. What size do you think I could get away with for the rest the season? 50-100G? What if I started doing light-dep sometime soon? 25-50G?

I wondered if this could be because the wind would really smack the plant against the cage. I took the cage off yesterday and she seems to be liking that better so far. Thanks for the pointers. I truly appreciate all of your alls help!

What do you all think about flowering my potted plants indoors? I would love to do this now that I am constructing my room, but am worried about bringing in all kinds of pests/potentially diseases.

This is my prefereed grow method, place the plants out in the morning, and drag the plants back in 12 hours later, it takes discipline and correct timing to do this task day in and day out, but you gotta work it, into your lifestyle some how is best, say for example, feed the pet/camel/bird/child...take you plants outside ..12 hours later

Tacos are cooking just had a shower, return plants to their cave, miss a few times and you will HERM your babes, more pain...? but gives great tasting bud
