i see on alot of sites that sell seeds that has the yield as 400-500g/m^2 the m^2 is how i represent the 2 being super-scripted i was wondering what do they mean? cubic meter in hieght? or a square meter of an area on the ground? as in planets that when on the floor cover an area of a a meter squared

It's per square meter of flat growing area.

These are per meter squared using SOG or SCROG growing techniques.

Dont always believe everything you read though. Along with these figures it assumes PERFECT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL which includes TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, FEEDING STRENGTH, Co2 ppm's kept at 1500 along with generally only a small drop in day and night temps.

So there are a lot of variables to control in order to achieve those numbers.
