perlite definately. people like the coarse stuff ! not the easiest to clean but doesn't give you a lot of the issues that the coco does..

yeah i'd do the regular pot until transplant just because you are forced to flower right when you transplant again and you get 2" more of reservoir. I'd do a coco drip setup or something like that , i don't really know what you plan to do as the medium
I could transplant them 2-3 days before flowering. Medium is coco/perlite 50/50. For reservoir i can use perlite or coco chips,i use them now...

I red that hempy in veg grows faster than drip coco, thats why i interested in this idea.Just that additional reservoir confuses me.

its up to you , you could do both. only reason i said do a drip setup is cause youll have an extra 2" res, but then you need a crap load of equipment.

I loveeeed doing coco, i'd do a mix of coir and perlite, with a perlite reservoir. love how easy hempy is.

any input on pH on soil hempys?

Hey guys. Dont know if some of you have seen a few of my other posts or not. But I completely forgot about Hempy Buckets. I was gong to do RDWC 8 plant setups. until I found a hempy thread and I was like OMG. lol

Here I am worried about funds to fund my new grow room and completely forgot about Hempy buckets. They are proven and work great. I used them in the past. I am going to change from my RDWC to Hempy with auto feed.

Plus they are very forgiving and easy as hell to flush if there is an emergency.

I am so glad I found this thread saved me a load of cash for the holidays. So I can get growing again and in a much shorter time frame.

Im not gay but I love you guys.

I'm personally a fan of AVID but id never use one of these bad devils. avid is ez. use it early, use it light, give it time to go away and it does the trick. the hotshots just seem like too much exposure is needed, I've heard of people leaving them in the flower room all the time....

also a lot of us do this medically, including myself, so that whole no hospital and no patient rooms thing kinda scared me
Yea,, Your not supposed to live with them or be in the same room with them for a long period of time,, That's just kinda common sense,, So I put mine in a zip lock bag when I will be in the area for a while, or when I just want to put them away until I need them again. Basically it dissipates after a while, which is why my test came up clean, I would imagine.

Hello Hempy World!

I've got a small grow in the prep-phase and I'm curious to hear what the WOH will think about my concept.

I know it is sacrilege to mess with the time-proven hempy, however that takes some of the fun out of my hobby.

My plan is to pit 4 roughly-equivalent sized potting systems against each other... ...For SCIENCE!

Here's the idea:

1: Smart Pot (Not hempy)
2-Gallon Smart Pot filled with 100% Brick-Coco and Drain Saucer for run-off.

2: Almost-pure Hempy:
2-Gallon paint pail with 1-inch Hempy hole, 2" from bottom. Drain Saucer for run-off. Resi filled with Rockwool croutons, and 100% Brick-Coco from there up.

3: Smart Hempy:
2-Gallon paint pail with 1-inch Hempy hole 2" from bottom. However instead of gluing a screen to the side, I plan to just line the inside of this bucket with a 2-gallon smart pot. The smart pot will allow air to breath down the side of the plastic pail, and additionally function as the filter over the hempy hole. Rockwool croutons in resi, and 100% coco from there up.

And finally the crazy idea:

4: Uber Hempy:
2-Gallon paint pail with 1-inch Hempy hole 2" from bottom. Plastic lid with 6" hole removed from top and a 1-gallon Rootmaker Pot placed inside of this lid. Glued to the bottom of the pail will be a 4" airstone to supply oxygen to the roots which will hopefully make it out the bottom of the rootmaker pot. Above the hempy-hole water line, roots will air-prune somewhat through the upper holes in the inner rootmaker pot. I've made a quick little 3D sketch to illustrate the concept (I'm a designer by trade). The idea is to get the benefits of DWC in a RTW system that also forces a ton of O2 through the root-zone. Since it's RTW, no worries about changing the Resi, or constantly opening the bucket. Also, the Coco will function as a smaller starting pot (before roots get to water), which in-theory eliminates the need to transplant.

1-Gallon Rootmaker.

Unless anyone can already see issues, I plan to face these 4 methods off in a grow journal under a single A51 XGS-190 starting just after Christmas.

Regarding the Uber set-up; If the the roots airprune, how will they reach the water?
Why not just go with a Waterfarm and Hydroton? It will outgrow just about anything.

Actually from past experience with the rootmaker pots, I can assure you plenty of roots will make it out the bottom ring. The question is, with the lid on the container, will there be enough moisture in there too get any coming out the upper ring holes...

My theory is that the upper ones will air prune slightly and the lower ones will make it into the water. I plan to feed daily.

If you are going to be running an air pump anyway, why not get a GH waterfarm plumbing kit and then you don't need to worry about watering it yourself?

In my experience, coco and recirculation don't mix well--especially using drippers. I love the coco media and want to use it for this grow, so recirc is probably out.

i know, i've thought long about air prune'd hempys.
there is a product called spinout not recommended for hydro but idk if hempy passes? maybe do it on the top 3/4 like an inch or two above water line.
alls the spinout is , is a paint that has copper ions that don't allow roots to grow within like, 1/4" of it.
this eliminates the spinout phenomenon, and is told to be used for soil

so tempted to try it on a hempy but scared of something bad getting in the buds. For now i've gone soil, because of some new seeds i got, and will go back to hempy sog setup when i pick the keeper and get it all in order. Last run was done with coco gro compressed coco. Imo was a pain in the ass compared to what i read about the "good " stuff. I plan on buying some real nice coco next up and then doing the sog idea.

also, the coco is to all go to compost and be eventually made into a ROLS setup.

i wonder if moe is ever coming back..
must be locked up... i'd imagine he'd be out by now though?

May I ask why you use such a big hole? 1" is waaaaaaaaaay bigger then I use or would use.
Thanks
Good point. I put the 1 inch hole because of a hempy how-to I read. That one used a screen though, so the hole on that bucket is in-fact too large to be used without one. I'll end up having to install a screen on it. Next time, smaller hole.

Merry Christmas to the Hempy Family!
At first glance the hole looks like a way to set the reservoir level doesn't it. Actually, it's an air passage. A large single hole or more holes radially, is a good thing. They allow quick exhaust of stale air in the res as you water and enable a good quick feed flow that's pulls fresh oxygenated air down with it. The holes also pass fresh air back in as the water wicks back upwards through the medium. To me the hole is the secret success factor of this "passive hydro" method.

Just started the process of switching my grow to hempy. Been running an F&D system. I love the results and growth of hydro, but hate the immobility of not being able to move plants. And the fact I'm losing about 18in of vertical grow space due to flood tray.
I like the mobility of soil grows, but hate the mess and if you do run into problem. Too Hard to correct.
So I decided I would try and get the best of both and go hempy.
I've started my new clones in hempy and will rotate out with the F&D as they finish in flower.
My biggest question would be, in both DWC and F&D res temps are crucial. How do you control the temp of nute solution in hempy.

You dont!! Just another great feature of the Hempy System. I mix my nutes the night before and then just water in the morning. That is my daily routine. As long as your water is pretty much just room temp, then your good to go. Benefits over Hydro -> No Air Pumps, No Water Pumps, No Water Chillers. Just make sure your PPM and PH is in order,, and Water Away!!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!!!!
