World Of Hempy

:leaf:World of Hempy:leaf:

Welcome to the World of Hempy thread.

Here we can discuss all things Hempy related and share hints and tips. I'm hoping for lots of member participation with pics of your own efforts. I'll do my best to answer any questions about my experiences and I hope you all will do the same. Lets make this a great thread and extol the virtues of the Hempy!

First thing I guess is to explain what a Hempy is;

Well simply put, a Hempy is a container with a Vermiculite and Perlite mix used to grow our favourite plant. The Vermiculite is a highly absorbant natural mineral, Perlite is described as an amorphous volcanic glass. Both are available at your local hydro store.

I want to give hempy a try but don't want to spend a lot on nutrients to start. Any suggestions?

I'm doing my first hempy run in 3.5 gal buckets, using Osmocote controlled release fertilizers (avail at Home Depot or garden center) that I learned about on this very thread. Around $2/plant cheap enough for you?

As I said, this is my first run using these prills, and the plants are looking great at about 25 days in flower. Look up @WattSaver for info - it was his post that lead me in this direction.

Oh cool, didn't realize there was a Hempy Thread!

Was wondering if you guys had any ideas for 1-3gal sized containers for hempy? (Closer to 1 or 2 gallon)

Also, I find every so often, maybe like 1 out of 10 hempy buckets (hempy solo cups) will suffer from "Compaction". Where water won't really leave the cup, and it just keeps filling like there's no hole, then roots start bugging out and seize. Any suggestions on battling this?

(^ I tried watering less times but then they dry out. I tried watering less each time I water but they still get thirsty. I am watering gently with a diy watering can.)

what are you using as medium? i was using straight perlite, and would get the same problem, even in larger containers. the bottom half of my containers would get so hard packed that 75% of the roots would be in the top half....i switched over to straight coco, then started using 70% coco with 30% perlite, and no more compacting problems at all.

towards the end of my hempy days, i grabbed some flower planters from walmart. like 2.5 ft long by 6 inches wide. i ended up doing 3 plants in each and they turned out nice. i didn't veg long so they stayed short.

and like Roger said, i did straight perlite at first and then added vermic to it and it stayed much "airier" if that's a word.

Coco and perlite sounds like a good medium. I would also consider adding some worm castings and regular soil for nutrition. But mostly coco, then a little more soil than perlite, and finally enough worm castings equally throughout the mixture to make it darker but not black. That’s probably what I’m going to try. Probably in a 5 gal with a hole for drainage near the bottom. This is a hypothesis that I’m going to test soon. I’m not a fan of vermiculite or heavy perlite.

i don't mix mediums. i think it's a bad idea. hydro is hydro, soil is soil, and soil-less is soil-less...they have different requirements and different characteristics...i prefer to run soil-less and hydro sterile. if i want to play with organics, i'll use soil.

Sharing this from my ig if that's cool. 3rd Hempy plant. 6th plant ever. Fastbuds Girl Scout Cookies auto, day 95ish, Ionic nutrients, 10L bucket, 3/1 perlite/vermiculite. Grown under 150w 3000k quantum board
