Xxxl hood vs normal hood!

so rn im debating about which way to go about my hoods. Should I invest in a xxxl hood? Another idea I have right now is get a normal hood which I see is around 2 feet long and 2 feet wide around that area. Grab one of those and put one 3 foot t5 fixture on each corner to help spread the lumens out and add additional wattage. I know the xxxl and side lighting would kick it ass but which can I go with first and get a decent yield? My money is on the additional t5s to help with veg but im just trying to get some more input on how the light will be spread out

If you are running an HPS or mh then I would suggest getting the hood; adding a few bars of flourescent light will not make a huge difference unless you are using all t5 the whole grow and keeping the plants small but improved distribution of an hid lamp could make for a better yield and/or allow you to squeeze more plants or space them out more. I invested in a huge xxl hood and thought it was maybe not worth the expense until I actually got it in my bloom room and was impressed by the results. The xxl hood is far better than the cool tube I had before & now I can put 9 or more plants under my 600w HPS.
T5s are good for vegging but have very little penetration into the canopy; not so good for blooming as the light is only effective for the first couple inches of each cola. Honestly cheapo LEDs are better for side lighting IMO. I use a 300w panel and a 185w UFO led for extending the light footprint even further. They are great for finishing up ripening plants because you can target areas that the hid cannot reach like the lower nugs. I use those yoyo hangers to angle the LEDs for maximum exposure to the buds. Works great; makes nice dense nuggets.

possibly one of the biggest noobs mistake is getting the biggest hood you can

as it will and does impede ventilation

that imo: is more importance than reflectivity

without good venting you plants will suffer

without reflectivity in most cases only you will suffer ..lol

The light from ur standard T5 flouro is great ..........but has no penetration

after about 10 inches fades fast

work on your lighting before anything else

good luck

You always have some kick ass advice thanks man, was thinking of going with UFOs just a little warry of the cheap LEDs as to funds are low but I probably will go with a normal air cooled hood and use the UFOs like you said to extend the light footprint

I will have ventilation but I will def keep that in mind. Most likely will just go with what sift said tbh

Would you guys start the seeds under the 600w mh or some LEDs with a veg spectrum? That was one reason why I was thinking about flourescents because Ive read around its best to start with those but would lets say 2 UFO LEDs be able to sprout them and get a node or 2 out to start the MH light? Thank you guys for the time!

No. Never use MH for babies or seeds. Way to hot. Go to Wal Mart and get a $10.97 T8 that is a two bulb fixture. Two T8 6500 K bulbs are about $8. You can put the light close to the plants too.

A stoner mentor taught me that it is okay to put small babies away from a MH light. What a waste of time that is. Probably this thread and youtube got me hip to using T8 or T5 for small veg.

Cheaper LEDs are okay for babies.

Someone bought me 4 like this but it was about $19 and shipped from NJ.
Yeah it is weak but baby plants love it. I had some sickly clones that were tiny that this type of light helped them recover.

Here it is $18.99. I mixed it with a 2 bulb T8 and the babies love it.

Cool I probably am going to go the LED route so I can have some extra spectrum in the tent and thanks for letting me know! I wanted to see what kind of LED wasnt to much or just right, I might just get a cheap 300w LED for the starting then add my 600w then maybe buy another 300w LED so I can have the HID in the middle and two LEDs on each side :)

Freddy's right flourescents are better for seedlings or small clones; I use an 8 bar T5 & got maybe 10 clones and 4 seedlings under that with just a fan blowing for circulation. Cheap shop light with HO bulbs will work great. Vegging under either the UFO and panel produces tight nodes too but they do throw some heat. Keep in mind the hood will pull much of the heat off the 600w but the LED panels are not vented; the little fans will blow out heat exhaust into your grow area. It really depends upon how big your bloom area is; the larger the better to distribute the heat. I wouldn't try to squeeze all those lights in a small tent or you'll be frying them. You don't want it to ever get hotter than 85 or so or trichome production begins to suffer. If you've got the space though dual 300w panels as side lighting will kick ass.

imo.. make your own CFL array here: https://www.rollitup.org/Journal/Entry/a-collection-of-diy-ghetto-blasters.30154/

as they grow be building your very own COB, see subforums here on RIU

Good Luck

I use something similar to that CFL light bar you got there Vostok. Great for starting sprouts or cuttings in the bedroom closet. Even vegging plants to a decent size before going under bigger lights.

Plants140916_01.jpg

Those same plants are now vegging under my old 8 - tube bank of T-12 fluoros as my HID grow lights are at a buddies for another month until his plants are done. They look like crap atm as I was away for 6 weeks since the first pic and just repotted into those 2gal pots. The wife isn't the best plant tender but she kept them alive until I got back! :) 4 are my experimental try at making my own autos and two are a very high CBD strain known as Otto#1. All are about to be cloned then those will get flowered out once I get my gear back.

Plants01.jpg

Here's a pic of my homemade veg tent with the light panel installed but not completed. Built hat panel 15 years ago and haven't used it in a dozen years. Pays to hang on to stuff I keep telling the wife! :D

The tent is just 2x2s and I used hinges so the walls fold in so I could get it downstairs. Barely makes it and now I'm using it upstairs in the spare bedroom. 8x4 tent is going downstairs when buddy is done to hook up with my regular grow room and it will be used strictly for flowering with a 1000W EYE Hortilux hanging off a 6' light rail to do the whole tent. Perpetual grow gonna happen finally!

Vegtent01.JPG

I've since added another ballast and 2 more tubes to make it 8. Each pair has a disconnect so I can run 2, 4, 6 or all 8. Total of around 25,000 lumens using Daylight Ultra 40W tubes that are hard to get these days.

I've always been a late adopter of new tech. Side effect of being on a ♫ Low Budget ♫♪♫ I guess or maybe being Scottish and a little tight with what little money I can plug into growing. Still running this rig with XP Pro and as it does everything I want it to I see no reason to do a rebuild with anything more up to date. Listen to radio all day and switch over to watch my sat TV every evening in my own man cave. Life could be worse. :)

I live way up in Northern Alberta and we got no stinkin' EPA up here. Just take what you don't want to the local dump and "Toss it in the hole!" :D

Take my pipe and some bud, grab a mickey of rum and go sit in my woods waiting for magpies to use as target practice with my little Ruger 10-22 semi-auto. Should have had the 25 shot banana clip in there for a better pic. lol

Goodlooks seems like t5 will still be on the list. Theres a cheap 1 bulb t5 on craigslist for 25$ bulb and fixture included. Was thinking get that and maybe another flouro or a LED to add on but just might get some cheap cfls to add on that thanks!

Sounds like you dont have many folks around your neck of the woods :) the greenery behind the chair looks great! Im from the desert and there is some green where im from but nothing like that I wish to someday live in a area like that when I retire and grow trees lol

What lind of LEDs did you replace them with? And spooky chemicals inside flouros are always fun! I just might gonthe t5 route but really wanted the LED just because its cheaper and (more watts)

I got them off ebay very cheap

and plugged them into my T5 array

I have still to remove the ballasts for the flours and such

maybe in winter while idle ...if ever ...lol

I have them on a counterweight that rides up and down

and offers the best height, a very convenient solution

good luck
