Actually no, the president of the United States is not a figurehead. No commander in chief of the largest and most powerful military in history could be reasonably described as a figurehead. No person who is the equal of 100 powerful people in one direction and 437 (?) in the other could be called a figurehead.

I believe it is time for the right (and factions of the left as well) to understand the pragmatism of this country. The right actually seems to think that we send money to other nations simply for the joy of doing good. What you say Grandpappy is true. Our foreign aid dollars go to maintaining (there's that word again) order in regions that are strategic to us - if we support dictators in order to maintain that order, so be it. Not all of our strategicly essential minerals exist within our borders. We get rare earths and oil and safe passage from one place to another from other places on the earth. We are an imperialist nation masquerading as just a good old peace loving country that wants nothing more than a little respect.

The truth is that much of our foreign aid goes to ensure that our companies are left alone and that we have constant access to material deemed essential to our military and economic dominance. We have a choice, we can spend some money or we can send troops. Most times the money is far easier and far less expensive.

No not all of them but there few and far in between.
