It really depends on how big you want your plant, how much space you have, and if you have enough lighting to penetrate big plants.

What/how many lights are you using to grow? How big is your plant now? Usually people like to veg for at least 5 weeks before putting them into flowering. I like to veg a little longer, around 7 weeks or around 2 feet tall. I grow with HPS lighting thou.

Your probably going to need more lumens for the flowering stage. 4 inches isn't to bad for 20 days. CFL's tend to keep the plants shorter and bushier. (Thats a good thing) Do you have any pics you can put up? With the lighting your using I wouldn't let them get to big. Your plants will stretch once they go into flowering. You could put them into flowering around 10 inches. What type of CFL's are you using? Cool White? Warm White? T5's are pretty good lights. Not to expensive and do a decent job.

Here is a good link for you. Its about CFL growing. Check it out

You can lower your lights a little. They don't give off to much heat so you can have them pretty close to your plants. I see a little stretching. Are those cool white bulbs?

Do i detect some nutrient burn? What are you feeding them? What type of soil are they in? Does it have time release nutrients?

the way your lights are situated isn't allowing the majority of the light to get to the leaves. CFLs give most of their light out of their sides not tops. You should just get some of those really cheap Y adapters and 2x as many CFLs and double up your power!

I would give them a good flush. I see the tips and sides are burnt a bit. When they are that young you have to go very easy on the nutes. And those Y adapters are pretty cheap. I use them for my clones. Because the way the Y adapter is, it makes it so the light's side is illuminating your plants, and as Swish said most of the light from CFL's comes from its sides. Plus having 2 lights on one plug is always nice.

afaik, spiral CFLs are best put vertically and the straight CFLs horizontally.

I hope everything gets better for you. Make sure you really flushed them out good. Make sure there is good drainage when you are doing so.
Yeah the more lumens the better. I will be looking forward to your updates.

every CFL is different the manufacturer will put on the box the "Burn Orientation" ive seen spirals with vertical or horizontal orientations. same with any bulb they all have designated orientations due to it being the best possible way and is how their numbers in lumens and such are obtained.
