Should I continue SCROG or say f*** it?

Fellow Growers, I am looking for advice on my grow. I built my Scrog structure so my plants haven't even come close to the top, and I haven't placed the screen on top either. I want to know if I should continue Scrog or just pull structure out and grow normal.
The reason I am (was?) doing this is because my plants get to big and fall all over the place, even once tied up so I was trying to find a way to keep them more contained and thought this was my best option. Now that the structure is up I am no longer sure... there are a couple pics below. I think it is too small for my 4 plants, actually I know it is too small but thought I would be able to make it work. It is 3ft Tall, 6ft long, and 5ft wide. I really want to continue with it but I am starting to think it will pose more problems then not..?
So my questions are: Should I continue, If not what other suggestions are out there for containing these ladies, any other people out there with any advice?

Thanks for the help everyone, I wanted this to be my first Scrog grow and still really want to do it because its a challenge and something new for me. But I do not want to comprise my harvest or create unnecessary problems (Mold, bugs, etc.) for myself either. All and any advice is welcome and appreciated! :wall:

oh, didn't realize these were outdoors.. from what i understand of scrog, it's used mostly indoors in order to spread the canopy out a bunch in order to get light to parts of the plant that otherwise wouldn't be getting much light, therefore, increasing your yields...
being that you're outdoors, light penetration shouldn't really be a problem for you imo, so no real need for scrog, unless of course you're trying to keep the plants short in order to avoid detection..

ScrOG is only useful outdoors under special circumstances, such as security/discretion.

The plant has spent millions of years developing the best way for it to grow in sunshine. When I put it like that, it seems a little weird to try and 'improve' on it, doesn't it?

Thanks Racer, detection is also a possibility. So if I could still do it with out any growing problems I would. I know a couple people on here have grown scrog outdoors I am just not sure how much screen their plants ended up covering. I just look down from the top of the structure and picture last years plants in my head and think "Clusterfuck" because how big they were lol! But if I could still train these to work I would like too.

Yeah that makes sense stikk. The main reason for it though was to try and contain them some and just thought of Scrog. I should have mentioned in first post that I would like to keep them at fence height but its really not that much of a problem I was able to do it in previous years.

yeah man, where i live makes growing outdoors pretty much impossible for me, but i would imagine you'd need a pretty huge screen to scrog them up nicely..
i'm sure it could be done, and done well, so sure, why not go for it since you already have everything you'd need, and they're pretty much all set up, minus the screen of course.. of you could always try and scrog one or two of them if you have a few, and see if you like how it goes, that way you'd not completely tied to the idea, pun intended of course, if you don't like it..
i always love to expirement on one or two plants out of a grow, just to see what works for me.. nothing better than first hand experience imvho..

Me to Racer I'm always trying new things out! I could possibly do that because the two in the back will hit the screen first and I could test it out a little bit, not a bad idea.

what strains are you growing gdp? is your user name a dead give away, and that was silly question? lol, the reason i ask, is simply because i was wondering how tall you might expect them to get.. but you did say you've run them before, so i guess you already have a good idea of finished height already..

Racer, lol this is the first year I HAVEN'T grown GDP! I have ran the two in the back before though Trainwreck and Headband. Growth is similar in my experience. The two in front are new to me but also seem to be growing very similar (thankfully) they are XJ-13 and Afgoo. I am doing kind of a test run this year to see what I want to continue with, I am getting a little bored with the GDP . The height in the back will be 6-7ft, and the front "should" be around 4-5ft, and that is with multiple toppings through the veg stage.

Fresno, what do you think about the work area, think its big enough to handle all 4 without causing problems? I know I can lollipop em so there wont be much undergrowth, my concern is the screen filling up to much before flower time. Any thoughts?

Yeah. you are gonna have one helluva time containing those plants in that screen. You still have like another 2 months veg + flowering stretch period. You can give them each their own individual screen and train them as much as possible through those until they fill and then come flowering stretch add another screen above for the tops to grow into for bud support. That one screen is going to be a bitch for plant maintenance as well as possible mold and/or insect issues. Just my opinion. My plants became very large in 2012 in 5 gallon pots and they were started in late April/early May.

is that galvanized steel mesh you're using for the screen? Have you ever had any issues with corrision or the galv affecting/tainting the plants?
Never any issues. I call those "Hog panels", there 52" X 16 feet long. I grow in smart pots, wrap a 5' high cage around the pots (pots are 4' in diameter), then lay half (52" X 8') hog panel on top of the 5 foot cage so the panel is horizontal to the ground. As the plant grows through the panel, I weave the plant through the hog panel. I do this until the 1st of August. Then I lay another hog panel 18" above the panel I weaved the plant through. As the plant flowers it stretches through the 2nd hog panel which keeps the buds upright. On the picture you see the corner of the 2 hog panel holding the buds up. That 2nd panel is 6'-6" off the ground.

definitely keep it, it will come in handy later on somehow. it will either support some of the main branches or you can build off of it.

Nice got a lot of advice thanks guys!!

Fresno, thanks for the advice that's what I am thinking. If I had a bigger area I could expand on the screen and probably not be too much of a problem. I could always get a second screen to support the buds once flower starts but might be more of an issue...

Treeman, that is impressive! From the looks of those I might have to re-think what I got going on here cause those are huge! I like the idea of wrapping them in a cage then laying a big screen over the top though, seems like an easier setup to me.

Avatar, I have never used trellis before... I used poles last year and just tied the colas up so they wouldn't have that "Gangster lean" but I was out there everyday finding more branches to tie up, then come harvest time it was a B****! And with the wind I get here they blow all over the place when they are that top heavy, so something has to be done to support them. With the trellis, is it like a scrog with out the weaving of the plants? I am assuming it is just there to support the plant? Any advice is appreciated.

TWS, Yeah one started to barely flower but there has been no progression... Same thing happened to one of my plants last year but turned out fine after a couple weeks and grew to still be 6ft tall with great smoke and high yield, so I was going to roll with it as long as it didn't get worse. If it does it will be replaced with a new one. Thanks man.

Buck, that is what I wanted to do if I couldn't Scrog it. I would still like to use the structure to support the plants even if I don't scrog, even if I have to re-build it some thats fine with me. I think keeping them contained in an area like that would be beneficial come flower time.

If I have a strong structure around 3ft to just keep the plants contained I could always add on (if necessary) to it and make another level for a support... Any thoughts on this approach anyone? Keep the structure and ditch scrog attempt? Use some trellis to support instead...

Appreciate it everyone! Grow, Grow, Grow!!!
