A-51 growers thread

I took these pictures of my photosensitive tent this morning, 9 weeks + 5 days in flower. This is a Big Bud under an XGS-190.

I LST'd the canopy which turned into a deep bowl shape. I call it "The Valley of the Dolls." :) I should have used something as a reference scale, but these things are large. In the background is a Super Skunk growing under the Blackstar v2 180 we talked about. By comparison the buds are spindly. It could be genetics, but 120w actual isn't enough for that space. Some of the SS buds have been under the XGS for a month (I don't rotate too much) and they're larger.

Here's an Orange Bud under the RW-150 (diagonal to the XGS)

Same thing about the reference scale. The bud in the back left could hide a coke can. Just held a tape measure behind it and 3". Hard as a rock.

There is another Big Bud under a custom Apollo 4 180w (130w actual) I bought off Alibaba. It's growing like the Super Skunk. Airy, light, spindly buds but not as spindly as the SS. Like the SS, it gets some light from the XGS and RW.

I don't think anyone would be disappointed with A51. The Chinese lights (which the Blackstar basically is, with onshore support) grows ok. A new grower would get some smoke. They really need to be doubled (or supplemented with those Cree bulbs from Home Depot). But, at that point it would cost nearly as much as an A51.

One space where I feel A51 lacks is the small-scale grow. Cabinets, autos in a 4' tall tent, etc. Spaces where more diffusion is desirable. 3w instead of 5w. Maybe white backboard or wide-angle reflectors like the Hans panel.

Reading Jeff's (owner of A51, username eraserhead) past posts, he contemplated producing replacement boards for the Apollo and perhaps other common Chinese "cartel" lights (the dozen designs that come in 1000 colors and an equal number of brands). That would be a cool upgrade path that would cultivate future A51 buyers.
A lot late but that's an epic plant under 190 watts. I have one too, and got some real dank from first try with new strain. This light works. Expensive but well worth it.

So you allow them to vegetate no longer than a month and then throw them into flower, which normally takes what, six weeks at least?
I've always done two months for vegetation and two months for flower.
Agreed, but im a personal only grower and using one 190xgs. Commercial types need that quick flip for the cash.

What's the deal with the 2015 models.. I see 10W diodes but the total power consumption of each will be the same..? Will they produce more lumens/lux, but pull the same wattage?

Soo wrong, I'm sorry you don't "like" clw lights. But they grow buds, big fat ones its not CLW's fault you couldn't grow weed with them. Don't be bitter

Sent from my XT1060 using Rollitup mobile app
lol I'm actually still using my CLW.. It's a step up from the HTG but just barely.. You can grow big buds with CFLs.. Once you get a better lamp (even my 2012 Area 51s runs laps around the thing) you will realize how much of a POS the CLW is.. Until then, do everybody a favor and stop recommending those crap ass lamps..

Jeff recently posted (<<link) they'd be modular, expandable, and something about how reflectors and/or lenses can be removed for more diffusion or focus (coverage or penetration). Sounds interesting.

Thanks az. I asked this in another thread but feel bad hijacking that thread.. I've followed a lot of the led guys here, but even after all the reading, Why are folks going with the all white 190 vs the r+w 150? Jeff doesn't offer application recommendations (for many reasons I'm sure). Is it just "pick a school of thought" and go with it?

I don't know the answer. There has been an all white trend. I suspect the XGS is just to offer an option to those who are inclined toward Onyx or Apache all white. I have XGS and RW. They grew (one grow so far) equally well. Since the RW uses 40 fewer watts, I'd say the RW is better. But, 40 watts isn't a lot. Seeing your plants under more natural light might be worth it.

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the RW-75 ... anyone recommend that or should I wait until I have the 500 for the higher power. I was thinking of throwing this in a 2x4x5 tent.
