Notification for FrozenChozen from Hot Diggity Sog

My declaration for this contest included me using my Metal Halide bulb for the entire duration. The bulb I was using was the Eye Hortilux Blue - a $120 bulb. This bulb died on me about a week ago and I went ahead and ordered a new one which arrived DOA yesterday. I've been using a cheapo MH bulb while I waited for the replacement. Because this cheapo MH bulb is not fit for the task I will be switching to a HPS bulb starting today and will run the HPS from now until the end. Because the rules clearly state no bulb changes, I will understand if you choose to DQ me. I wanted to explain the situation and the reason for the change so I will await your ruling.

I'm cool with that, a light change this early ain't gonna benefit your plant enough to have a problem with it. I had to change a bulb also and @FrozenChozen was ok with it. Some other opinion's?

I originally had a different line up of seeds I was going to run. I had some Provision seeds in there before they announced their support of this comp, and I decided after looking back on other comps that I wanted to leave myself some room for error at the start - lots of folks out in previous comps for one reason or another in the first few days after popping beans. I decided to cut it back to just 3 to start so I could leave myself 2 additional slots in case something terrible went wrong in the first few days (beans not popping, random death by becoming chupacabra food, drunken friend believing he’s Godzilla and eating little trees, etc). After that I decided I was going to just run 2 strains, and do 1 of each strain in super coco and the other in a hydro rig just for fun. I got pretty turned off by an exchange with someone in the comp regarding my hydro rigs and said eff it and wasn’t even going to enter at that point. Then a day or two ago, I decided eff that and started soaking my seeds and tossed them in cups as soon as I saw the seeds cracking.

Strains
Provision Seeds Purple Orange Kush
Provision Seeds Deep Purple Kush

Nutrients
Should not need any as I’m using a super coco mix, however, I have doubts about the volume being able to support this all the way to harvest with only 16oz. I’m just going to declare that I’ll use regular old Canna A+B if needed as this goes on (have a bit left over now that I’ve switched the veggies over to the aquaponics system). I’ll just straight water up until that point. I’m actually curious to see how far along I can get with just the super coco in this size.

I also decided to do my Star Wars cups as normal coco hempy style with perlite in the bottom, and the TMNT cups with just straight super coco all the way. (In case you were wondering what the S.C. and S.C.+P are on the labels in the pics)

Lighting
For this comp, I threw together a custom COB LED (approx 110W). I had an extra makersled heat shield left over from years back and was going to just do 2 Vero 18 3k’s with 4x730nm, but found a handful of other reds/blues in my parts bin and decided to toss them on as well (can’t hurt, right?). They are driven by 5 Meanwell LDD-H drivers. (3x700ma to drive the 730nm, 620&660, and 410/430/450 channels, 2x1A for the Vero’s.) While I was waiting on a few parts during the build I got bored and did my own sunrise/sunset controller. I’m running 13/11 for my light cycle as I do have a sunrise/sunset routine and am using the 730nm at sunset.

In case anyone is curious about it, the sunrise routine goes like this:
0-5m: Ramp up blues from 0 to 100%
5-10m: Ramp up reds from 0 to 100%
10-25m: Ramp up Veros from 0-100%
Total: 25 minutes

Sunset goes:
0-5m: Ramp up 730nm from 0 to 100% (simultaneous with the Vero ramp up)
0-15m: Ramp down Veros from 100 to 0%
15-20m: Ramp down red and blue from 100 to 0%
20-25m: Let 730nm run.
25-30m: Ramp down 730nm from 100 to 0%
Total: 30 minutes

I thought the sunrise and sunset would be nice for the little stressed out root bound plants and make their short time on this planet a little more enjoyable. I even took a page from FC’s book and am planning on waking them every morning with bird song. I’m going to go a little further and put them to bed every night with a little bed time story and then play them the Jeff Bridges Sleeping Tapes.

Grow Medium
Super coco mix. If you must know it’s a mix of coco, composts (yes, including former MJ plant compost as well - cannibals!), guanos, meals, rock phosphate, homemade kelp meal, perlite, vermiculite, lime, azomite, worm castings, unicorn farts, some stuffing I think I mugged a care bear for during a strange encounter, squirrel tears and maybe one or two other things - can’t remember it’s been cooking for a few months.

Germination
Popped the 4 seeds listed above into some shot glasses on 2/22 and 2/23. Instead of just sinking, the seeds were cracking open and tap roots were showing so I moved them into the cups. The DPK cracked and got moved into cups yesterday, and the POK cracked this morning so got into cups today. They haven’t broken ground yet but if they’re not up before the deadline in a few days, I’ll just toss em in some buckets and do a full run with them.

@Mo! It wasn't our exchange that turned you off mdwc was it? Also, I was waking and putting to sleep with bird song.... Now I've moved up, I have a Tibetan Song Bowl that is specifically tuned to trigger delta brain waves in humans, the same brain waves that are triggered during meditation and REM sleep... Delta brain wave "music" also cause EM frequency that is known in plants to increase vigor/overall growth...

Heck yeah. Didn't want to deal with flimsy ass cups the whole time.

I'm a big coco fan now. Had great results using just coco hempy 3 gallons. Just A&B for nutes. 2 plants under a 600 HPS the entire time. First time pulled over 1/2 lb, then just under 3/4 and this last one (harvested to clear room for the comp) got a bit over 3/4 lb.

Decided after the 2nd one to give super coco a try. Figure if nothing else it will work well in my wicking beds in the AP system.

@FrozenChozen Just a quick question. I'm just asking because I see a lot of variation in one respect (and when there is variation there is room for controversy) and I just wanted to ask for clarification before it becomes an issue later in the comp.
The rules state
  • Germ date and strain name must be written on the cup by first post.
But I see a lot of cups with labels rather than actual writing (and/or without a written date) on the cup. Is this allowed? I only ask because I was under the impression that the purpose of actually writing the date on the cup was to ensure that the same cup is being used, (i.e. to prevent someone from swapping in a stronger plant at some point between updates), and I'm not really sure that a label (Which could be removed and attached to another cup) really fulfills this purpose. Just seems like if people are going to need to provide kill-a-watt pictures proving their light died (as @iliadtattoo did), it seems like the standard of proof has been established as high enough to preclude removable labels and require permanently marking the cups. Again, I want to reiterate I'm asking to try to prevent problems, not cause them, so don't take it personally if your plants are labeled, if I am doing something that seems out of line with the rules, I would ask that you do the same and please ask about it now while I have time to fix it without a DQ rather than staying quiet until it's too late.

Labels are alright
yeah my bad germ date was the 5th
not posting an update for 20 days is not cool.... How do we rectify this?
