Usually knew what they were doing and did it efficiently too. I miss our parent's generation. They were quite functional.

I dunno about that. If anybody got dealt a sweet hand it was our parents generation. Frankly, I think they pissed it away.
I think we could be referring to different generations? But I don't think that makes you wrong. I agree but would extend it to most generations fail and the better they succeed the harder they fail.
My parent's were born in 1913 and contended with the Depression and WWII. When were your parent's born? I saw my parents and their siblings as mostly mindless automaton's during the day and zoned out at night. They merely existed as cogs in the machine. I was attempting to damn with faint praise, ie, while facism rose the trains ran on time.

i agree with that ,when i was coming up parents in those days just had kids for farm hands 10 in my family ,but all shit a side when i moved out at 14 yrs old i realized how good i had it ,life was and still a mother fucker .they weren't so damned dumb after all

Too true I guess. I am picking on their kids. I do tend to be harsh on them, but it's always a moving target.

and I failed hard. So I can't disagree with you at all. I think all generations are limited and molded by their times. I felt with what I was given I should have advanced the flag further and made it easier for my children and that failure will haunt me. Damn you for making me think this hard this early!! I always enjoy your thinking. I wish I had the interface to express my thoughts better.

With netflix I revisited the Andy Griffith Show (see avatar). The jokes were fresh again after 50 years....Great to revisit the classics while trimming, you don't necessarily have to watch to follow the action...the old memory kicks in.
