Oregon Will Become Second State to Offer Free Community College

How well do these programs work in other states? How many graduate? Do they owe it back if they fuck off and fail?

How well do these programs work in other states?
Tennessee was the first state to implement it and it began this year I believe
How many graduate?
Too soon to tell, but to be eligible for the scholarship students have to keep above a 2.5GPA in Oregon and 2.0GPA in Tennessee, have to take 8 (or 12) units per semester, have to be American citizens and residents of each respective state
Do they owe it back if they fuck off and fail?
No, they get DQ'd if they fail any of the requirements

If it's free, do the teachers all volunteer their time? Who pays for the lights? Books? Buildings, etc. ?

Its free, remember? No one pays for anything!

Every three years, but its not free.
It should say tax payer funded then.

I want my credits, or they don't get theirs.

It won't be a free ride -- the student still needs to figure out how to meet costs for food, housing and other basic needs. This removes about $1000 per semester from their worry list.

And as far as I can tell, Spandy can qualify if he meets the requirements. I think even a Sasquatch could qualify,

You guys seem to think that this is a boondoggle. I don't get your drift. If you think education is expensive, consider the cost of ignorance.

Are you opposed to a strong national defense?

I am opposed to the concept of a nation state held together by force.

I do not oppose people defending themselves or building mutual alliances for defensive purposes.

One interesting thing you may already know, the United States constitution forbids a standing army in the present mode.

Consider the cost of indoctrination. A government education is an oxymoron.

rob,

The world has moved past your rural village that you idealize. Do you think that your village can produce the kind of scientists and engineers and creative thinkers that are needed in this era? When the student applies himself, college education teaches critical thinking, which is not the same as the cynical criticism that you are afflicted with.

What happens when an organized army comes to steal your undeclared countries land?

college education teaches critical thinking
Not really. Lots of people have college degrees and can barely operate a microwave. Most colleges just make you regurgitate information back to them in exchange for your money.
Some of the more learned places do teach critical thinking, but the vast majority just want your cash and could care less if you can put two and two together.

You can learn everything for free on the internet anyway.

Governments have made themselves the final arbiter of who knows what and only offer degrees to paying customers. Private colleges know this all too well and have a special accreditation club they all belong to and they won't accept the university of the free internet as a member. Maybe you can CLEP a few classes, but all the upper level stuff you are going to have to pay for in order to get a piece of paper that says you know enough in a subject to pass their tests.
