Our first grow room

We just wanted any advice to go along with our first grow...

Heres the set up:

And our baby:

some basic info about our set up:

-we have (2) 100w CFL's (*replacement for 100w) running approx. 18 hours light and 6 hours darkness

-in the picture, the plant is at the end of her 3rd week (during the plant's 2nd week, we had a problem and the plant sat by a kitchen window for a week

-the lights are approx. 2.5 inches from the tip of the plant

-watering is done daily (at first light) with enough water to wet the soil. i also added "plant food" i got from lowes. i dont remember the brand but it's a 10-15-10 solution.

-i made a homemade c02 dispenser out of a half bottle of water, 1 tbsp of sugar and 1 tbsp of yeast and shake it 1-2 times a day.

that's about it, if anybody has any comments, criticism or advice please feel free and let us know! thanks:joint:

You might want to try watering every other day now, as hopefully your plant is rooted after three weeks. You want to water when the top 1/4 inch is dry.

When you say 100W, is that equivalent watts, or actual watts? If you're working with two 23W CFL's than you are definitely going to need more light. At least two more bulbs. This could be why your plant looks a little small for three weeks.

dont think u need c02 yet and u need lots more sugar than yeast, i use a 5 litre bottle and half bag of sugar, and 1 tbsp of yeast, the yeast eats the sugar and yeast can get very hungry.

Thanks for the replies...

we are now currently using (4) 23w CFL lights for 1 plant at about 2-3 inches from the tip of the plant to the lights. is that ok?

also i just noticed that the 2 seed/sprout leaves (the 2 oval leaves) are withering and turning yellowish/white. is this normal? or do we need to fix something. thanks!

also how much longer do you guys think itll be until we can figure out the sex of the plant?

btw, i noticed that there are a bunch of little flying bugs (we believe that they are gnats, but not sure) i dont know where they're coming from cuz the grow is in a closet. how can i get rid of these pests and are they harmful to the plant?

That should do fine.

Mine did the same thing. Shouldn't be a problem.

It's going to be at least a few more weeks before you start to see pre-flowers. You may not be able to tell for sure until after you have switched to 12/12 for a few weeks.

I don't believe they'll do your plants harm, but try and get rid of them by hanging some fly paper. Hopefully you won't need any pesticide.

I am a newb but is adding reflective surfaces around that walls a good or bad idea? Ive heard some say good and others say bad (might burn the plants) but if its good...theres my tip haha.

Looks good and good luck!

if you have reflective surfaces it should be clean and free of bumps or bends. does anybody else think we should keep the white surroundings or change it to mylar or mirrors?

also, im not sure how much im supposed to water the plant. ive just been guessing this whole time so that might also be why its not growing super fast. if anybody can help me with this that'd be awesome. thanks!

the flying bugs are fungus gnats. they can be harmful to the plants if left alone. they eay the roots, hang some sticky traps and cut some into peices and place in the pot on the soil surface, also cut up some potatos and place on top of the soil to dfraw the larva out of the soil. good luck ;)

Leave the walls as they are. You don't want to ever use mirrors or tinfoil. Mylar is good, but there is only a slight increase of reflectivity versus that of plain white walls.

Just water when the top quarter inch of soil gets dry. When mine were that size I would water them for about five seconds using my pressurized mister. I would adjust the nozzle so that a narrow stream came out, kind of like you would get from any standard spray bottle. Then again I wasn't growing in soil, but tiny little RapidRooter plugs. I'd say your plants could use as much as 250ML, maybe less, probably not more than that per watering.

so does it work? the last post didn't awnser my question real well ..
What part of "You don't want to ever use mirrors or tinfoil" suggests that it might work? It doesn't reflect light as well as the other methods mentioned and has the tendency to cause hot spots that can even burn your plants. Flat white paint, panda film, or mylar should be the only things you use. Is tinfoil better than nothing? Maybe. Why take the chance by doing things half-assed, though?

Now let's be polite and get back to discussing the threadstarter's grow. Sorry for the threadjack, Shannons Keepers.

dude thats some kick ass setup, im about to do the same. About the C02 how can i make it?
for a small grow area, just get a regular sized water bottle and fill it halfway with water, and i put 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of yeast. generic kinds for both are fine. and just shake it 1-2 times a day.

oh wow, 250ml is about half a bottle of water! i've only been using about 1/8 of a bottle of water each watering in the morning and a heavy spray of water with the mister.

hey cr8z13, ever since we added the extra 23watt cfl, i just noticed that our plants leaves are withering/shriveled up. but they're still pretty green. im afraid this has caused a lot of damage to the plant. what should i do asap? i think it's either the lights may be too close to the plant, i put too much plant food in with the water, underwatering or it's too hot in that small space(there is no exhaust vent with the door closed). if you or anybody has any ideas please let me know asap!!

btw: i placed the plant by my bathroom window (which is dark except for the moonlight) after its 18 hour light cycle because i thought that it would help relieve some of the stress that i caused it today. it doesn't start its light cycle until 8am

You probably shouldn't mist/foliar feed more than a couple of times per week. Some people don't do it at all. 250ml(8.5 ounces) might sound like a lot to you, but I can almost guarantee that you won't be watering every day anymore, nor should you. Again, wait until the top 1/4 inch gets dry(stick your finger in it).
