hso blue dream getting ready for transplant

Bigger roots = bigger yields.

Soil is cheaper than weed.

But when going bigger, wider is more important than deeper. Look at any of the old timers' threads here on Outdoor Growing. You can see what bigger looks like.
Ok there are lots of things that affect over all yield I.E. pruning, genetics, starting your plants indoors first, and overall sun exposure. .......but a good rule of thumb and a rhyme at that lol "bigger roots bigger fruits". If u plant a apple tree in a five gallon bucket would u expect apples? If u want to grow TREES...WITH HUGE BUDS plant in the biggest holes you can. In a five gallon I used to get up to a pound...when I went to 50 I got more then 2 pounds...etc etc

I tried growing blue dream from humboldt. I found the weed to be medium potency but I didn't cure it so it may not have been as good as it could have been. I tried some golden tiger today and there was a big difference between the two. But blue dream does seem to have a hearty production outdoors so best of luck to ya!

YA ive heard both sides of the fence with the blue dream. I guess when it gets down to it, I only picked it because it has such an outstanding production yield. I am growing other strains too that are more kicken. Thanks so much for the info!

So since were talking about blue dream genetics which seed bank has the best genetics if hso doesnt?
Honestly? Hso does have good genetics. Its when it comes to seeds there are always a couple of phenotypes. Ive noticed that with every seed ive ever ordered. You can grow three seeds of the same strain from the same company and get three very different buds. A lot of people will argue a true blue dream is a clone only, however some who get clones from california said that they were not very good either. Ive smoke hso blue dream that rocked my world and the high lasted for hours. Ive also smoked it and it was mid grade at best. I think its best to make sure anything you grow has to be completely mature and make sure you cure it properly and slowly. I know anytime I do a slow cure the bud is always outstanding and way more potent then when I fast cure.
Hope that helps.

so if i was going to order hsos blue dream it would be to my advantage to grow out as many seeds as is practical and find the best pheno and keep it for a mother? or would the genetic variability exist even from clknes taken from a mother with proven quality?

When I was starting out, I would simply grow sever different seeds of the same strain, then as soon as I could put them in flower I would and then when I harvested I would keep all of the weed from each plant separate and labeled.
I would leave growth on the bottom of the plant I just cut and re-veg all of them.
The point of doing that is you will not truely know how a plant produces or what its going to be like until its harvested. Ive had little plants that ended up monsters and ive had fast growth in the beginning that looked like they would do great but ended up not.
So when u re-veg u know exactly what you are getting and you can pull as many clones from it as possible.

At least I hope you have an understanding of what re-vegging is. Some do not even know you can harvest the same plant several times.

yea ive read a bit about it but im fuzzy on the actual process......something about leaving skme buds and changing the light cycle back to veg and skme ppl say to even put it in the dark for a day or more and add N and stuff like that. If i ever get to the place in my persinal grow where i need to do it i will def read up on all the dirty details :)

thanks so much for sharing your knowledge

Yeah thats pretty much what it is. Your clones should not vary in genetics from your mother plant so you should be fine.
Tho I have heard several times that eventually the clones will get weaker in potency the longer the mother is alive. Who knows for sure?
I do not mess with clones myself any more due to the fact they do not have the vigor of growth that a seed does.
I would rather make seeds myself then use clones...but that is a person to person thing.

So do u grow indoors or outside?

in door right now....my first real grow only for personal use and i think ive made most of the usual mistakes already in just my first grow so im hoping the next one will go alot alot better......at least im tryin to be optimistic :)
Aww thats awesome though! Always more and more to learn. I wish you the best for future grows!

Thanks. Dont wanna detract from the OP though but i also hate making new threads for every single question i have on different aspects of growing which is why if i find a thread thats exploring something im interested in learning ill throw a few questions in there.

so tangentially related since the pot size was brought up earlier......if someone is growing in 50 to 200 gallon pots are those usually going to be fabric sakcs or something like that?

do smart pots or fabric potters actually allow air to the roots noticeably better than plastic pots, enough to where theres a n oticeable growth difference?

for smart pots.....does shape make any difference? im seeing square ones that claim it prevents root circiling which makes for better nutrient uptake......is that confirmed by any anecdotal evidence or studies?

like this for example

As far as square vs round that I do not know for sure...
The fabric pot making a difference is spot on though. Roots breathe oxygen. The happier the roots the better off the plant is.
A little trick I learned when I first started growing indoors TO SAVE MONEY is I went to a thrift shop and bought a whole bunch of pillow cases. .25$ each I think. I filled them up with soil and grew out of them. Wow what a difference.
I think they held around 7 gallons.

Google "monster marijuana plants"
You are going to see plants that produce over 10 pounds a plant and almost all of them are 400 gallon or bigger smart pots that are round.

You can also make smart parts with landscape fabric. I make them for my peppers and tomatoes. The one disadvantage of fabric pots is they lose water much faster than plastic pots.
Hey Larry! I have a question about that. Im assuming of course that you sew it together. Would you have to use nylon string?

What I did was unroll the whole roll, fold it over on itself and put a seam from one end to the other, making a long tube. For the sewing, I {or the ladies in the quilter's club who did the sewing for me} used heavy duty UV resistant thread. I measured off how tall I wanted the pot to be, added the radius, then a couple more inches for the knot, and tied it off with used haystring. {I've raised cows all my life, so have lots of used haystring} Go ahead and tie two knots, about 2-3" apart, then cut between them. I'll look for a picture of one of them.
