The homeless/zombie crisis.

I have experience being homeless and also helping the homeless and anybody that lives in or has been to San Francisco knows how huge of a problem it is. when I was 21(I am 33 now) I found myself homeless living in my car due to a few things that happened but I still woke up everyday at 5 am to get in line at labor ready to dig ditches and do other pretty tough work for minimum wage so I could make my car payment and eat. Eventually I saved up enough to rent a room and got a better job so with some effort people can turn their life around. On the other hand there are people that do choose to be homeless and are just lazy, but that doesn't stop me from trying to help when I can. A few years ago I spent a few hundred dollars at the dollar store buying Christmas bags and stuffed them with beanies, socks, gloves, razors and other items. I drove around on Christmas eve and handed them out to any homeless person. Some were very appreciative, others just asked if I had any money which was discouraging but that didn't stop me from handing them out. I guess my point is that people are homeless for many different reasons, and just because some don't want or appreciate help that doesn't mean we should just ignore the problem or assume they're all lazy or drug addicts. Life is hard enough without others trying to put us down or judge us for our situation and I believe in treating everybody with respect until they give me a reason not to. Imagine if you didn't have any friends or family, no phone, nowhere to shower and all of the shelters are full. What would you do? I am not saying to give money to every homeless person you see, but sometimes people just need a little help to get out of their situation. Sorry for the long post but I feel this an important topic that unfortunately won't ever be completely resolved.

Seems like this Tinychat thing really gets under peoples skin. Do y'all know what happens there? I'll tell y'all, We hang out, listen to music, smoke weed, drink beer, take shots. It's literally just like hanging out with my homies IRL. We have fun and kick it. We don't talk about RIU or the members, we just have a good time.
Gary i love you and all, but i can't believe that you guys dont talk about riu members. Ive never really wanted to "hang out" with most of the crew. Some but not all, but my impression of it is that its just a gossip factory where targets are picked out and hunted on riu. Not my kind of party. Oh and thanks for not becoming a sheep lately. Takes a lot of brass to not run with the pack.

I think that's what some people thought it was going to be like. Just us yapping about RIU, but don't you think that would get boring after a while. Let's say we spoke about this thread, right? How would that convo go?

Me: man those guys are some insensitive pricks
Everyone else: yea they are
End of convo lol back to drinking and chilling.

When you go to the bar with your buddies do y'all just gossip about RIU the whole time? I doubt you'd have very many friends if ya did that.

I didn't realize I was supposed to document every good deed I've ever done. Why exactly would I do something like that? To get likes on facebook or something?

I guess I can start a list of good deeds I've done just after I got back from vacation during the week of thanksgiving and up until today, otherwise this will be a long list.

I noticed a young hippy looking couple at the gas station I had just filled up at. They were standing at the back of their old van and were holding a sign saying they needed gas money, so I handed the guy a $20.

I guess I shoulda taken a selfie of me as I handed the $20 over.

Fast forward to thanksgiving day, I was headed to my mothers house to build her a porch. My stepdad had started it 4 or 5 years ago and never got past putting 3 posts in the ground. He would come up with every excuse in the world not to finish it, and wouldn't take any help either.

Well I get to the 4 way stop next to her house just as a truck is passing through with a travel trailer and right as it goes through the 4 way the wheel comes off the axle. I parked in my mothers drive way and helped the woman and the elderly man following her get the wheel back on.

I managed to break my car jack trying to lift the thing and had to resort to a rusty bottle jack I had. After about an hour we finally got it back on, everything that could go wrong putting it back on did. The jack broke, the trailer had to be jacked up then we had to stack bricks under it, then jack it up more in steps, the bolts wouldn't go back on for shit because some of the holes were stripped.

When we finally finished and removed the blocks from under the wheels the truck started down the road because she had left it in gear and I nearly got hit. They offered me money for helping and I refused. Then I spent the rest of the day building mom's porch for her with lumber I had bought with my own money.

I didn't take any pictures of any of this either. I was more worried about getting them on their way and finishing mom's porch before it got dark than I was about getting karma points on reddit or something.

Then just last weekend I donated 4 toys to the toys for tots drive the local MC holds every year. This was the 5th or 6th year in a row I've done this.

I didn't take an pics of me buying the toys, or dropping them in the box though.
Thats the longest post ive ever seen you write. Im honered it was on my thread and such a list of nice things youve done.
To answer your question its not about facebook likes. I dont have a face book. Or a twitter, or even know what a reddit is. It was about inspiring people from the site to do something nice for someone that they didnt really have to for. I thought it was going to be a hit. It has brought some great discussion up, and some really nice stories of compassion and selflessness. I only have one posted pic on the good deed thread but hopefully itll catch on if i canvas the site. I was hoping it would only take one person to start a trend and get everyone to do it. Theres still time. Its not Christmas yet, who knows?

I got what your saying. Its the mob mentality that makes the users on the otherside of the pack think that tc is where they go to hold the lynching meetings

I carry around a little sack of larfy buds to give to streetcorner bums in lieu of money that might be spent on alcohol or worse

I don't give it to people who are outwardly crazy though
Last time I was in San Francisco, I threw a bindle of good weed off the balcony of the room where I was staying. Homeless dude was crashing in the alley. While toking on the balcony, I saw him smoking a bowl. I knew what i had was fire. Didn't know what he was smoking. Wrapped a nug in plastic and tossed it down without saying a word.

Saw him react to it hitting the ground about 5 feet away from him and walked in before I assume he looked up. Felt great the rest of the day
