I got a gut feeling that trump won't run in 2020 and make up some excuse his fans will eat up. I at least think he knows if he runs again he'll get wrecked at the polls.

He is a horrible senator who only represents who voted for him.
The last reasonable republican senator we had was John Heinz. Reasonable republicans are as rare as dinosaurs now. Good luck finding one.

2020 will be a complete reversal of our current situation. That's why McConnell didn't want to change senate rules to require a simple majority. He may be a fucking cunt but he's not stupid. Rallying behind the orange psychopath was political suicide, but the turtle may survive it.

In another thread here in the politics section, @Fogdog posted an opinion piece from the WaPo that showed that white working class people will often support politicians and policies that directly hurt themselves.
They are persuaded to believe that such assistance might be offered to those less deserving than themselves- which is bad, even if the very same assistance is offered to them as well.
Somehow the massive tax breaks and subsidies going to the ultra wealthy and large corporations are given a free pass because 'they deserve it'.
They don't understand how such beliefs are so damaging to their own situation and as such it's very difficult to break through this carefully created and interwoven thicket of misconceptions, also known as 'propaganda'. Those of us on the outside looking in can clearly see how they've been suckered, but they seem resistant to any explanation of the illogic of their positions and the ultimate detriment to themselves.
I've been trying to figure out what messages could break through the right wing 'fog of war on welfare' for years and I'm at a loss. Even members of my immediate family have swallowed the bait hook, line and sinker and I've found it impossible to have an intelligent discussion with them.
One specific example is the conversation I had about income and wealth inequality. My brother in law simply didn't see anything wrong with high levels and was resistant to any discussion about how taxing them at lower rates was directly detrimental to his own situation. He's not at all stupid; he was a small business owner and is now in the State Department and doing very well in his career.
This situation vexes me greatly.

The trouble with your statement is that a large group of voters in fact DO believe this somehow helps them!
How to change that? There's little doubt that working class conservatives are indeed screwing themselves by supporting such politicians and policies but until they can be convinced of their error, they'll enthusiastically keep making it.
The Left needs to come up with a narrative that effectively combats this right wing, inequality serving propaganda.
