i just ordered a lb of jacks classic no.1.5 20-10-20 citrus and 5lb of potassium sulfate.. was told a 1/4 tsp per gallon,, then to weigh it out,,, will i be ok just using the 1/4 tsp or do i really need to weigh it??
I would weigh it

it takes very little to make a big difference... potassium sulfate has 52% potassium so its very strong

youll need a good scale for about $50 +/- that measures grams several numbers below the decimal point
like a jewelry scale

a kitchen scale wont measure increments that small

that's my opinion......
unless your medium happens to be soil that buffers then you might get away with measuring it 1/4 tsp

Instead of needing that kind of precision, I just mix larger batches that I'll use up in a few days. Just give it a stir before using.

Always nice to see you!

that works also

when measuring a blend like the hydro special 5-11-26 its more important to mix larger amounts
because your dealing with a blend of several salt minerals in the same container so small measurements are unreliable in precision

with a single element like potassium sulfate a good scale is fine to mix smaller amounts but in a blend its best to mix larger batches for sure

Since you're here, what do you think of switching to a dry nutrient mix consisting of 4-20-38 with micros? It too would be mixed at equal weight of calcium nitrate and half that weight of mag sulfate.

the 5-11-26 special has magnesium and sulfur in it also

does the
4-20-38 have magnesium or sulfur in it?

I assume the micros are roughly the same

if we assume for a second that the 4-20-38 has the same % of magnesium listed as the 5-11-26 (3.1% Mg)

that mix would yield
42ppm Mg

How do you guys deal with providing iron over the long term to soil?
In the aquarium business, we have to fertilise plants with a daily or every other day iron dose, as the iron becomes used up or unavailable very quickly.
Does soil behave the same?

Is anyone who uses Jacks aquagold finisher, willing to list the nutes in it. I couldn't find the label anywhere.

The iron used in hydroponic nutrients is chelated to remain in solution.

Thanks i'll pass that on!
Told him to look for 5-11-26 with micros and 15-0-0
If they have that or 4-20-38 or thereabouts, again with hydroponic micronutrients, that will also do well. The other two salts to get are calcium nitrate and magnesium sulfate, aka epsom salt. Yes, mag and sulfur are supposedly included in the micros in the mix, but my resin production improved when I began adding epsom salt so I recommend it.

+1 for them sulfates singing in the stink!

So, keeping firmly in mind these are meant as ratios, not exact recipes, what do you think I should change if anything?

VEG
2 parts 5-11-26 mix
2 parts calcium nitrate
1 part mag sulfate, aka epsom salts

BLOOM
2.5 parts mix
2 parts calcium nitrate
1 part epsom
.5 MKP, monopotassium phosphate

LATE BLOOM last 2 weeks
2.5 parts mix
1.6 calcium nitrate
.75 epsom
.75 MKP
@ttystikk are you still using this recipe? If so, is it working well? I have been using Jack's hydro 5-11-26 at approximately the 3:2:1 ratio with good results, but am considering changing it up since the plants are flowering.

Also (dumb question here), you are using the ratio by mass, correct -- not volume? i.e., you are weighing the nutrients, not going off teaspoons/tablespoons.

on behalf of ttystick (hope you don't mind)

the jacks pro is basically the same thing as the 5-11-26 hydro special

no real difference except the jacks doesn't require the Epsom salt cuz its already in the bag
(speaking of jacks pro, not the other available formulas by jacks)

switching from the 5-11-26 hydro special to jacks pro ....well that's like trading oranges for more oranges

youll get the same thing
(except the jacks pro has a bit more magnesium than the hydro special)

...and yes every thing should be weighed in grams
