UV burn???

Last wed this was possibly most beautiful plant I've grown, lush, growing fast just pretty, nice smell coming on... she's 5 weeks into flower. In coco, temps 75 to 78 max lows of 70ish.

I always run 1000w hps in contained hood, two 300w led, and two t5 uv bulbs plus few cfl if there's a shady spot. This is one big girl in small room, room is 6x6 she's 5x5 lst and scrogged flat.

First time I used t5 uv bulbs got the new hortilux powerveg uv. Started em midway thru flower on same schedule as other lights. Well wen I put this girl in flower one of the fixtures died the other was running a 6month old bulb.

Last week, I got a new fixture and two new bulbs, but got agrow pure uv bulbs cheaper than hortilux and I'm tite on cash, hooked em up Tuesday back on line. I worked in room wed night for couple hours. Friday I realized I was sunburned bad! I never got that from my hortilux bulbs. So sat I got to my girl n she looked stressed slight leaf curl and I shut off those fucking uv lights.

This is what they look like by today, I'm damn near in tears. She doesn't visually appear to be growing like she was and not drinking as fast...

I get uv hurt her, evidently new bulbs way more powerful and she wasn't used to it. It's not proximity to main light as issue as they were perfect before I bought that new fixture and got uv light going again,

At this point anything I can do to mitigate the sunburn she got or ride out n hope for best, oh smell is back to nill

That's why they recommend sunscreen. An I don't really think there's much you can do to recover those basically sunburned leaves. Just nurse her back and re-evaluate those bulbs next grow.

You are supposed to use the pure uv bulb on an independent timer for a few minutes each hour.

Turn it off when working under it. It would be a good idea to cover skin and wear sun glasses under any grow lights.

Yes. The hortilux is a full spectrum including uv. The uv is a small part.

The pure uv is, well, its pure uv.

Any nursing suggestions for a case like this... iv never made a similiar screw up... plenty of others but nothing like this.

When i google uv burn i just get light burn advice to move lamp further away..

The bigger concern would be the damage lights can do to your body. Macular degeneration is not pretty. Grow lights can burn your skin as well as your eyes.

Its no biggie. Just be careful with uv lightning.

Thanks for the kind words, but i am. She was supposed to be my personal county fair show off. She was so big for my tiny lil set up and was looking so bautiful and growing amazing. I am confident i have limited her true potential now...

At this point i guess i have to try to breath and give her a moment and put my faith in the amazing resilience of our girls...

Much like heart disease caused by blocked arteries.

Uv can worsen it. Blue light has been implicated in causing it.

Rather safe than sorry. If you are stupid enough to go stare at grow lights on with out eye protection then so be it.

i did the same a few grows ago. had it on for a few hours, came back to plants hating me and the light. leaves looked like leather, smell was totally gone, etc. i made it to harvest but the smoke was disappointing to say the least. no smell, hardly any potency too.

I have one of those bulbs and used it full time. It depends on strain and distance using.

That pure uv bulb is powerful and doesn't need to be run very close.

I used it on one run and the plants didn't show negative signs. I suggested using it full time to others. It burnt their plants and I felt like a real dick.

I like Agromax 10,000k+uva bulb. It can be run full time.

I know people say we are after uvb but uva works.

Did you know cataracts can be eliminated naturally with an herb called cineraria? Been done in India for 1000's of years.

Here in America the AMA has directed an expensive lens replacement procedure. They insist there is no treatment other than surgery.

Or you can use vitamins and homeopathic eye drops for a couple of years when you first notice them. I had 80 year old and older people get their drivers license back with no surgery.

Same with macular degeneration. The meds can help return proper aqueous flow.

The main cause for the cataracts and Mac degen are the age related clogging of the aqueous ducts in the eye.

It's just crushing to see what's happened to her. She was so big I took it as personal challenge to see what I cud do w just one, and it couldn't have been going better till I gave her melanoma!

I usually take my girls long, if it's looking like it's not gunna recover well n no smell coming back I won't run her long. I'll give her a moment a week or two.... if no smell n not looking good:

I'll Chop her see how she is, if disappointing maybe hash it all.

If it was typical plant it wudnt b such an emotional blow, I vegged her since last Christmas, we were close. Call me crazy but I told her apologized n kissed her good night the other night I felt so bad.

Thanks for sharing, sucks but stuff it happens. I could be wrong but I think uv is why you have to harden plants off? If so, can you harden them off to this level of uv?

Yes and I'm not sure. In retrospect this is exactly why you have to harden off plants, even marigolds started inside before putting them outside, or at least this is part of it I bet... I do think hardening them off would have helped introducing it gradually and early instead of turning them on in week 4 of flower. However reason I seen no issue doing this was that is how I did it when I originally bougt the fixtures and the Hortilux UV bulbs, but as whitebb2727 pointed out, the first bulbs I used UV was only a portion of their light, where as these "PureUV" bulbs are truly that, I just assumed it was a brand name, the guys at HTG said this was their equivelent to the Hortilux PowerVeg UV...

I think these bulbs could be useful but one would need to do it in short spurts, and guage plant reaction, and that would also create a hardening off process I would think.

The good news is smell is begining to return and she is looking perkier and less stressed, these girls are some tough bitches no doubt. I'm also a realist though: all this energy she is using to repair herself is energy not going into bud formation so I'm still convinced I've handicapped her potential, but also confident now shes not going to die. Yes I was worried about that, that she would continue a downward spiral as I thought she may be damaged deeper than the eye can see, which in part may be true. I am now at least hopefull she will finish ok and hopefully at least respectfully...
