I'm going to disagree with Coco and say yes, a well put together system seems to outperform HID. But I'm just going by what the guys are saying that have switched over are saying.

I reckon bang for buck cobs and leds in general have a lot of catch up to do and I run leds. Used to run hps but my smaller space is better suited to leds so I that's what I do. If space wasn't an issue I'd be using the older tech and growing beasts.

There’s a big difference in initial investment a 1000 DE Gavita will cost around a grand, a LED of comparable output will cost you 4 Times that amount. COBs aren’t what people will be using in another 5 years they weren’t designed with this application in mind take Phillips for example they lead the way in horticultural lighting with H.I.D about 3 years ago stopped all production of them and went into L.E.D and do they make C.O.B’s ? I’m all for advancement in lighting but there’s a big difference in what people say and what people can prove and the numbers aren’t there for L.E.D lighting the purchase cost is too high at the moment and with quantum board technology Moving forward C.O.B is already on the way out

Yeah I haven’t checked his thread for a while,last time I did he was trialing a few Big quantum board fittings that looked impressive.
