You can go as low as 6-8in,
You can feel the heat when you put your hand on the light panel, move your hand slowly away from the light down towards your canopy and you can feel the difference in temp within a few inches.

Depends on the led I have to keep mine at least 36” an dimmed down to 50% or they start bleaching out.

Agree with Lord, it depends on type I think. The COBs with reflective lens to increase light penetration are powerful.

Depending on age of the plant you won't want to cause light stress which is more likely when closer than 1.5 ft / 45cm / 18".

I think the panels, with the red / blue individual diodes tend to be able to get closer / less intense, but have no personal experience with them

Your plants will tell you within a day or two if it's too close by drying, bleaching, curling at the top leaf

I agree with the 2 posts above. With leds it's not so much heat that is a problem, led's will bleach your plants, turning tops white if they are too close. If you're using blurple leds than you're probably fine. If they're higher power leds like cobs, especially if they have reflectors, then you may want to back them off a bit depending on the size of your plant. Big mature plants can take more light than younger ones.
