I do occasionally wonder how the world would have been different if Patton turned east at Berlin and did what had to be done to wipe out the Stalinists.
And broken the pact? Very trump like. U.S vs the original allies? In that day and age I don't think it would of ended well. You would not have had a harbour or airfield in Europe from which to supply from. May of changed the South Pacific as we see it today as you would of had to use your Pacific fleet to try to take and defend a supply base in Europe. That or tried to invade Australia for a bigger foothold and to try to drain forces from Europe. Either way the logistics of fighting those two wars at either end of the world may of been to much, especially with Canada at your doorstep. Which could of pushed over the boarder at any time.
Patton would have had Russia in front and behind him (remember Russia was first into berlin) and Paton would of ground to a frozen halt come winter. Russian troops would be given amble time to come from the japan offensive (Russia was about to invade Japan just before the bombs were dropped. May well be the REASON the bombs were dropped and was probably the reason Japan surrendered to the US. Surrendering to the Russians would not of ended well for them.)
Its a lovely excise in "what would of happened" but I don't think it would of ended well for America at all.
What happen because of the war and after the war was a much better outcome for America.
The problem the world now has is that America became to powerful and projected itself through out the globe. Influencing govts and trade in a way never seen before due to the shrinking world and advancement in technology. Which would not be so bad if it lent itself to listening and being more introspective in regard to the United Nations and other foreign governments who have a different take on type of government.
Wielding a big stick only works for so long.
