Unfortunately, at this point in history, our society was still ignorant to the health hazards that radioactive materials could cause. These same women started to get very sick, and many of them died. The story goes that many of them, not having a clue as to the hazards of radium, painted their teeth and nails with the paint. Some even used it as a face makeup to surprise their friends and boyfriends. I guess this is where the saying goes: “When she enters the place, she really lights up the room.”
They covered up the health problems from their workers and ignored complaints of ill health, as well as forcing the company physicians to stay quiet about the alarming health problems of the radium painters. It was said that when some of the women blew their noses, their handkerchiefs glowed in the dark. In one cruel instance, the residues from the factories where the dials were painted were reused to make sand for children’s sandboxes. When the watch company owners were confronted with the knowledge that the sand may be toxic, they responded by explaining that the sand would be beneficial to the children, like the mud of the famous curative baths at health spas. (The analogy to the tobacco industry begs to be noted here: It was not the watch industry’s finest hour!)

Basically, the U.S. healthcare system spends about $1 trillion per year (and possibly more) fighting the effects of excess sugar consumption.

Sodium benzoate is banned in the European union but is in all American sold sodas that aren't labeled organic.
Stevia, ethyrtol, and essential oils should be the only ingredients allowed in soda. I have at most two mineral waters a week flavored in that manner.
Sugar which isn't bound to pectin and fiber is a poison and has no nutritional value.

A small amount of sugar in a healthy diet isn't going to harm anybody. Stevia "tastes sweet" but consistently loses to sugar in blind taste tests.
For the rare moments when I use a sweetener, it's honey or sugar. But not often.
I don't know where you live but in the Willamette Valley, we have a terrible infestation of invasive non-native blackberries. 11 months of the year they are a truly obnoxious invasive thorny tough weed. But for four weeks in summer, we have gobs of blackberries free for the picking. I juice the berries and make a wonderful blackberry soda using 1/2 cup of juice, 2 tablespoons of simple syrup (made with 50% sugar and 50% water by volume, about 50 calories) and unflavored carbonated water. A cold glass of that on a hot day is glorious. The sugar gives not only a smooth sweet taste, enhances the berry-flavor, gives a good mouthfeel but also provides a kick of dopamine to enhance the moment. Some things in life shouldn't be tinkered with.
The US has increased already high rate of sugar and high fructose corn syrup consumption by 30% over the past 30 years, mostly through consumption commercial soda. That stuff is toxic. On that I agree.
Referring to the OP, let Californians decide what they want to do about the health crisis caused by artificial sodas.

3/8 tsp of erythritol with 1/96 parts stevia added to a 12 oz can of Cola LaCroix tastes near exactly like a 12 oz can of coke with 9.75 tsp sugar. Also the icky slimy coating feeling of a real coke is gone.

Other than my zero calorie sodas, I eat all whole food.
Like today: 10 bananas, 20 olives, 2 cups of kale, 2 cups edamame soy beans, and a brown rice coconut red bell pepper eggplant jack fruit curry. That's slightly over 2,000 calories and I don't ever gain an ounce.
The standard American Diet, SAD, isn't real food.
Eating like that even though I have diabetes, my blood sugar is better than a a SAD diet person.
The only thing which sucks is having to eat all day long or lose weight.

While I'm in excellent shape at around 8 feet tall and tipping the scales at slightly over 700 lbs, I'd never deign to force anybody to consume or not consume whatever they wanted to.
Here I am about to military press two large bears for multiple reps.

That's the point..without living wage people resort to food stamps and sugary junk because that's what $200 monthly gets you. they're worried about someone's health? since when? why are 30M uninsured?
when a mother drowns her car full of kids, make certain to drain the lake so it can NEVER happen again.

I love a dollop of honey in my coffee or tea, love an occasional peanut butter and honey sandwich too. No store bought crap either, farmer right down the road is a bee keeper always has organic honey for sale.
