You are definitely right about it getting pretty compact Flowki. This is my first time making substrate for above water so it’s trial and error, what should I add to make it compact less? I am adding more perlite for sure next re-pot.

It is hard to see but there were runners coming right out of the bottom too but alot definitely took the path of least resistance.

Try to quote a post or @name or else it's difficult for anybody specific to see your responses.

I know that some people have tried mixing coco with soil, seemed like mixed reports if I recall. Other than that perlite as you said is an option but some people also don't like that for it's reported tendency to float up to the top after a while, but surely better than nothing. I'd say you're better off heading into the organic section for some solid answers.

I aquascaped aquariums for years so I do know a bit about growing just in an underwater environment.
Were you doing it back in the VHO days?
I had an IceCap solid state VHO ballast and that was cutting edge tech back in the day, coupled with Actinic tubes, there wasn't anything I couldn't grow!
I suspect these days everyone is using LEDs and T5's.
Just about the time I got out of the hobby was when the U shaped compact fluorescents were pretty popular.
I miss my reef tank...
Watching that was so much more interesting than TV.
There was always something going on in that tank...
