Ok I need to know about hps

Ok I have been growing for about a year with leds. Haven’t done too bad. Not real good either. The most I’ve ever got of a single plant is 5 oz so, I’m thinking about going to an hps. What kind of hps does it take for veg and what kind of hps does it take for flower? Do they use lots of electric? And do they get really hot? I have a 3x3 veg tent and a 4x4 flower tent. Would one light do in each tent? Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions I know noting about hps but am looking to improve my quality and yields

5oz out of 1 plant isn’t too shabby my friend.

Agree wth this

If your moving towards hps, you should really be considering cmh. Best of both worlds

Little more pricey but nothing crazy.

315cmh is supposed to be great for 3x3s

3000k or 4100k bulbs, guys are doing great using either
I seen some double cmh315, which is 630w is that good for a 4x4? Do they keep the tent really hot? My led keeps it’s too hot gotta figure something out on that

I took down 15 oz from two plants, one in a 7 gal pot, one in a 10 gal tub, in an open area roughly 12 square feet, on my first attempt with a 315 CMH.
I build my own high quality LEDs for most of my spaces, but CMH is really, really good.

Also a CMH fan. Yes a 630 would be perfect or 2 315s for a 4x4 space. But if you have problems with heat running LED your really gonna have problems with CMH as they run much hotter. I run 2 315s for a 4x4 space but have the room air conditioned.

I agree.

Only thing i could see adding difference is the quality of Leds hes using, cheaper leds are giving off insane heat too in some circumstances, while obv the qbs and strip builds are not.

I am currently running 1 315 cmh in veg in my 4x4 and havent even needed the exhaust hooked up yet( temps always staying around 75-77f) , i expect the 2nd 315 will bring temps up too high, so will be using exhaust during flowering.

I have been really impressed by my 315 tho so far.

For HID lights you want Metal halide for veg, HPS ( not dual spectrum bulb) for flower.

For a 3x3 in veg you can use either a 250w or 400w MH. More wattage is more heat but more light and faster growth.
For a 4x4 in flower you want minimum 600w or 1000w HPS.
Yes they create heat, that is easily dealt with by extracting out of the house. Unless you live in a really hot area where your already at or above the ideal temps without lights on. Then you need to look at cooling.

CMH , a 315 covers a 3x3 and a 630 is lots of light for a 4x4. You can use either bulb for both veg and flower. I would go for the lower K bulb though.

Saying 5 oz per plant is like saying how long is a piece of string, on its own its a good amount from one plant but how many plants were in your flowering space?

I like good LEDs, but if you have cheapish ones then the most cost effective upgrades are in this order.

1, MH-HPS
2, CMH
3, Quality white LEDs.

Any light creates heat, HPS projects more heat downward in the form of radiant heat from all the red - Infer Red.
LED most of the heat comes out of the top of the heatsink.
Both have advantages and disadvantages, heat can be your enemy or your friend.

The key to getting the most out of your tents is lighting it adequately and managing your plants in veg to fill your space.
Often with low end LED the mistake a lot of people make is not having enough light in the first place.

Before changing your lighting you need to ask yourself do you have the ability to properly set up your environment.
There is little point in doubling your wattage and heat if your in a closet with zero ability to get that hot air out of your house and properly exchange air.

Light is hot - its why leaves transpire

600w hps is actually not very hot whatsoever - makes a shit room heater (some seem to theorize the opposite of thermodynamics though and then try to sell you and led)

I thought about getting one of those portable ac units

And it’s like a said the MOST I’ve ever gotten off one plant is 5oz that only happened one time lol. It was off my Tangie strain. But I’ve never got less than 2 either

If you’re getting that kind of heat off a blurple, you’re really gonna get hot with CMH or HPS.

I can’t let my grow room get too hot cuz I have beer fermenting in it almost all the time, and I have musical instruments down there as well. So I use COB LEDs. Stays cool. I get quality even if I give up some quantity but I still have buds from 2 grows ago and I give a lot away. Between the wife and I we’re a gram a day type smokers.

If upping your quantity is your goal, you will do best with HID. It’s trickier with the heat and intensity to deal with but once dialed in you’ll like the results. Quality too.
