Best way to start seed

I have read a bunch of threads on how to start a seed/s and they are all a little different! Which brings me to my question, what is the best way to get your seeds started properly?:weed:

I've only done one method (just these first two times in my first grow) but its works great!... Its the wet paper towel method...

Just wrap with wet paper towels on a plate, put a bowl upside down to cover... THEN it helps to keep it worm so on a heat vent, hot-water heater, etc... you should see tap roots in less than a day.

seconded.

Put a wet papertowel on a plate. Put your seeds on the towel, fold the towel over the seeds so they're covered.

Put another plate on top of it, or a bowl, or whatever. I used a plate and it looked like a flying saucer.

I put it on my cable box and bam...within a day or two I had tap roots. I put them in dirt and within about three days they sprouted through.

When I planted mine I did a test. I put some in a plate, and some directly in dirt. After they rooted and I planted them, the ones in the plate that sprouted tap roots popped out of the soil the same time as the ones directly in the dirt.

The good thing about the paper towel method is you can tell if one of your seeds is a dud without staring at a pot of dirt for days, wondering if it'll pop through.

I would have to agree with everyone else that the paper towel method is best, but there are advantages to direct soil planting & that also works very well. Try both.

use a propogator and jiffy/peat pellets and you will get 100% germ rate.
you dont even have to touch the seeds this way.
the seed opens and the tap root grows downwards always the pops the pellet surface perfectly.i have used the paper towel method before and it works but why fuck about germing seeds this way untill you can see the taproot and then transplant it carefully without touching root tip downwards into your medium??.
thats just stressing the seed/taproot from the get go by transplanting from your paper towel into the medium when you can just drop the seed in a hole in a jiffy pellet(5mm deep) cover slightly with medium and place in a propogator in a dark place(21-23*)and in 70-85 hrs the sprouts emerge.as soon as they emerge put them under light/s.
works 100% every time even with bagseed i have experimented with and its very easy

This has always worked for me. Toss your seed(s) into a small container with tepid water in it. They'll float. Within 12-24 hours, the viable seeds will sink. Once sunk, place seed point down 1/2" into slightly moist, or dry, medium. Set in a warm, bright local or place near a warming light.
2-3 days to surface.
You may have to poke the seed with a finger to get them to sink. They will once they are full of water. Any that won't sink aren't viable.

a good way to check the viability of seeds.
a question though i plant my seeds 5mm deep in my jiffys and you are saying plant 12.5mm deep does this affect any kind of stretching because usually my sprouts stretch once they have lifted from the jiffy surface(and the light is close enough).
THANKS.

I have tried to "start" growing weed for many years and never got to harvest time, but I am newly divorced and live alone now (should see my groom ;-) so I am well on my way. I like the paper towel method best, but I found that you need to be on top of it! When the seed cracks the root grows like wild fire, and when it gets more than 1/4 inch then it is hard to plant in a rock wool or soft plug becasue the root is long and twisty and you can ruin it. If your soil planting then dont worry and as metined above you can just start it in your good soil and wait.

I get distilled water (warm & no fertilizer), and make sure it is very luke warm not too warm, put in 16oz cup, then dunk the paper towel in, let it drip for 20 secs or so fold it how ever you want or use two paper towels, and put seeds on spaced out a bit and cover with paper towel. I put paper towel on a plate and cover with another so it looks like a flying saucer as mentioned in a post earlier, I also tape the plates. I check it after 24 hrs because some seeds will crack and root that fast. After 48 hours you will surley see root or should. I then use tweezers to pick up the seed (dont touch root) and put it into a rock wool cube, soil, or plugs) TRY to get it so root is down, set in a dark place at least 72F. I then go and hit my bong and wait for my little girls to pop, then your off and running to growing the bobo bud.

Dunno. Very well could be a factor? I'd try 10mm and see if it helps at all. Maybe you're onto something.
Are your seeds breaking ground to intended lighting? If not, that's it.

not sure what you mean by thats it??.
i keep the pellets in a propogator(total dark)and when they lift the surface of the pellet i put them straight into light.
is this right???.
THANKS.

Well, thanks for all the tips! I'm doing an aero cloner so I have rapid rooter plugs to start the seeds off in, then once they are 1-2" I plan to move them into the aero cloner to start the whole grow process. Any advice specific to this method?

Well I disagree with about everyone, just put some good quality soil in a 16 oz cup, add water and then add the seed. The seed will sprout in 3 - 4 days and you can let it grow in the cup for a month or so.

Paper towel method just seems like a bad idea, handling newly formed roots and all that, added stress that shouldn't be. I also don't see the famous paper towel method recommended for any other plant, just a stoner idea that caught on because everyone is mystified by the plant and want to see things happen as soon as possible.

Just put the seed in the pot and grow like any other plant.

I'm not sure what you are asking.

Get 2 16oz ploastic dixie cups. Drill 5 3/16" holes in the bottom of one cup and then fill it with soil. Put the cup with holes inside the cup without. Water the soil. Let sit. Then remove the bottom cup and dump out the excess water. Take an ink pen or something similiar and make a hole 1 inch deep in the soil. Plant the seed. Cover the seed and hole by pushing the soil over the hole with your finger. Put a few drops of water over the hole and you are done. Put the cup under your light setup. The plant will sprout in 3 - 4 days.

You can do the same thing using a normal pot.
