They are a popular choice. My personal choice after a seemingly endless process of learning and selection is from HLG, the quantum boards for most grows or QB96s for someone with a lot of height to work with.

Efficiency, spread, spectrum, intensity, heat dissipation are all important to consider.

I havent used the Vipars but know they are popular and work. Hopefully someone else can comment from their experience with those.

Building your own i.e. the diy options from companies like hlg are not true diy. Basically just connect a bunch of parts and insure the wiring is correct. It saves a lot of money to put them together which will teach you a lot about lighting too.

More boards at less power is generally ideal. You want a consistent spread across your space with minimal hotspots.

In a 5x5 space (actually 24sqft) i have 8 hlg qbs, capable with the drivers selected to get 900 watts. I have an extra saber at the part of my room where there is no reflecticity (open space). So I have 1000 watts across 24sqft, 40 watts per foot max and 2.5 efficiency. 2500umols / (24sqft / 10.76) = just over 1100umols per sq meter.

Do a bit of reading to understand why i went for that many umols. Its a little more than needed which allows for dimming or having it up a bit higher for better spread and no chance of light burn.

If you want a fast and strong primer for lighting read Fluences report, they make the spidrx which you dont need at the price, but their research and writing is excellent.

Take your time

Your lights are the most important thing you will buy, the limiting factor in your grow most likely.

Thanks man much appreciated I'm thinking about building a grow room in the near future probably gonna be a 8'x 12'x 10' with full reflective panels ceiling and walls at 10' high I'll have plenty of hight to lower and raise there lighting to accommodate for taller plants if I need to. Also thinking about going solar so trying to keep the power at 24 volts as to not have to use any serious inverter's... All knowledge is welcomed thanks again!!!

My only serious comment is this -- do not skimp on light intensity!

Hey guys and gals just wanted to give a update after the slow start and slow go but thanks to everyones advice and I really appreciate all of you that pitched in!!!
