Does anyone out there absolutely hate their job?

I went to college got a BS in Geology thinking I would come out and do field work as a scientist. Well, I’m doing field work alright, but just as a manual laborer making $17/hr and hating every second of it.

I applied to work at the front desk of my local gym, I would take a 50% pay cut if it just meant being happy every day!!! Not sure if the fiancé would be as excited about losing income as I would.

I think I had a panic attack earlier by just thinking about my future at current manual labor job. Had to tell my boss that blood sugar was low so I could run to the gas station and buy a 40oz just to get a little numb.

This is starting to sound like a conversation I should take to reddit. There are some nice mf’s on the mental health sub. Funny how some internet strangers can turn your day around.

Anyways sorry to rant, peace to the RIU fam :bigjoint::peace:

Sorry to hear this. If you wish to be a working geologist go back to school. You usually need a graduate degree. Check into financial support. You might find with working at school, research fellowships and the like you might be able to survive until you get the terminal degree. Unless you can do it online though you may need to simply stay in place until Covid finishes with us. Also make the the area you specialize in is growing and pays well.

I'd really stop the escapist drinking too. That could eventually compound your problem.

My life is awesome and filled with days of growing pot. I was in a similar situation as you. Although I've had several careers in my life, I couldn't stand any job I've had (save for being an arbitrage clerk working on the trading room floor, that was exciting, but doesn't really exist anymore.) Just the waste of life that is a job was killing me - the horrible early morning commutes, spending half the day (every day) with people that I would never voluntarily spend any time, doing work that really made no difference, and the awful rush hour commutes back home. Just spending all my time making my bosses dreams come true instead of my own was very depressing. So, in 2007 when I started working a sales job at home, I decided to make a change. Over the next few years I studied my ass off on how to grow weed, and converted my cute little office into grow room. I really got the process down and was growing excellent dank, and started to make much more money growing for the black market than what I could make at my job. Plus, I was having so much fun! The extra time this afforded me, along with the extra money (about 100k a year), allowed me to pursue my dream career of playing music. So here I am over a decade later with a successful music career and an established black market weed biz that makes about 60% of what it once did since legal rec weed came to town. I do what I want, when I want (within reason, as I'm tethered to my grow), and have saved about 150k in cash. Growing weed has become a job in itself, the glory is gone and the shine is off the apple. But it is still the most enjoyable way to make money, except for playing music. My point is that it is much more important to do something you love than it is to make money, life is short. If you can find a way to do both, all the better. I never hated any jobs but one. That was HVAC service and pushy sales. Can't stand ripping people off and crawling around inside attics. Quit that within 4 weeks I think. I used to work the same thing for 5 yrs prior with good people and business. Moved and hated it after that. Realized it aint for me.
Love my job I've been in for years now tho. Gives me a ton of flexibility personally while having a lot of fringe benefits. Its not a well paid position but I'm also not in a higher tax bracket. Full benes, 401k, etc. Never will be laid off even in these times. Its pretty rock solid and I am thankful for it.
