Bringing this back from the dead, Rocket Soul do you know if it's a good idea to remove the lenses on these cobs so the centers aren't as hot?
I was cleaning my grow room and found my old Phlizon cob, I was wondering what I can do with it.
Im not too familiar with philzon to make such advice, but can talk in generalites:
Lenses focus light but also generally "use" up light by not being 100% efficient. They can also trap heat close to the cob which increase temps and lower longevity.
Focusing light maybe a good idea or a bad idea depending on the space: if you dont have very reflective walls its better your light has to hit the walls. The walls would sort of act like a reflector; another type of optics.
not focusing light would give you a lower hanging height but youll generally have higher light levels since nothing is lost to optics.
But then theres the heat factor: both by bringing the light closer, more heat, and there maybe an effect of covering your light emitting surface with glass or plastic, making the light more agreeable with the plant (i have no evidence for that but seen a few growers getting results like this; bad plant growth and deficiencies until they tried with something covering the but im not too sure about it).
Warranty: may be void with any modification.
Being a pro experimentalist id probably try it if the considerations are covered; at least youll end up finding put what works in your context.
Edit: optics has been discussed plenty around here, this post have some links. One of them to a thread by
@SupraSPL , a guy who laid out loads of the fundamentals and ground work for diy led, an oldtimer ledguru who posts rarely nowadays. Some of his threads are very good read.
I tried to search but didn't find much so I decided to start this thread. If you know how to match optics to different cobs (cree 3070, vero 29, etc) please post here so we can have the knowledge when we need it. Do we really need optics to begin with? What is the difference between the...
