Man arrested for riding in back of driverless Tesla on autopilot gets out of jail
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - A 25-year-old man was arrested after he was seen riding in the back seat of a Tesla with no one in the driver's seat.
How about losing his driver's license? This guy is easy meat for anybody who wants to run him off the road or sue his ass. If he worked for me, he'd be looking for another job right now, someone with this poor judgment would be a hazard to any business.

Get in front of the fucker and slam on the brakes, he probably doesn't wear a seatbelt either. How can this be? The driver's seat has a sensor and can tell if you are sitting in it and wearing your seatbelt? How is it possible for this vehicle to even move without someone in the drivers seat? I can see these cars being recalled for several reasons, this being one of them, fortunately this particular thing can be fixed with a firmware update.

Most vehicles will move without someone in the drivers seat......jam a brick onto the gas pedal of my F250 and it will drive off by itself....

And into nearest ditch...
Some regulation for cars that have "autopilot" methinks. No way you should be able to start the thing without someone in the drivers seat and no way auto pilot can be engaged without someone's arse warming the drivers seat and the seatbelt on too. Fortunately that can be fixed with a firmware update and the government should be on their ass about it ASAP. You would think that they would be smart enough to figure something this fucking simple out for themselves.

I said cars that have an autopilot feature, not just electric vehicles, but those that proport to "self drive", with hands off the steering wheel. It's kind of a no brainer, since you can't depend on all drivers to have a brain, much less use it, as the story you posted illustrates. A firmware update would be the easiest and cheapest solution for Tesla and will save them a massive lawsuit. If I can ask this question, a lawyer in front of a jury can in a massive civil suit. How come the autopilot feature can still work if no one is in the drivers seat? The seatbelt light and alarm knows you are there, why not the rest of the car?

A software update will be much cheaper than a jury settlement.

Does it steer too? My point is, anything on the road that has automated steering etc, should make sure there is someone in the fucking drivers seat at least. All vehicles have sensors to let them know if someone is sitting in the drivers seat and some even weigh them for proportional airbag deployment, much less seatbelt use.

I'm not picking on electric vehicles, I'm all for them, just advocating common fucking sense! Tesla's are a long way from back seat driving and so is everything else on the road. No vehicle should even start or move unless someone is in the drivers seat, whether they have cruise control or autopilot. Furthermore vehicles with power windows and door locks should have an easy manual means of escape.

This happened in Canada a few years back and illustrates the point, if the battery is disconnected, or there is an electrical fire...

Oh a Suicide subscription. The technology ain't there and won't be for awhile, they will still need a warm arse on the seat and better make sure there is one there or get sued out of existence one day.

Several studies highlighted that robotaxis operated in an Autonomous Mobility on Demand (AMoD) service could be one of the most rapidly adopted applications of autonomous cars at scale and a major mobility solution in the near future, especially in urban areas, providing the majority of vehicle miles in the United States within a decade of their first introduction.[7] Moreover, they could have a very positive impact on road safety, traffic congestion and parking.

I figured long haul trucking would be among the first applications, but they would need to be hybrid diesel electric to avoid gear shifting. When the Truck hits the city limits a driver climbs onboard and takes it the final few miles.

So if your car parallel parks automatically and hits another car doing it, who pays? The insurance company might wanna know. I think in the end, it will be insurance companies making the call on self driving vehicles, they are the ones in the risk business.

They are experimenting with drones to deliver stuff, less obstructions in the sky, unless they happen to run into ME! ;) A new sport might be shooting the fuckers down with auto BB guns @ 1000 RPM

I think trucks make sense to become the hubs on highways and act like whales with the pilot fish all around them, the cars fall into sync with the trucks and pay a small attachment fee to the truck drivers.

I would want the driver of the truck I’m attached to to have more than a weeks training :o! Some of the drivers here were not even tested on highways :(.

Your problem though is Elon Musk.

The Tesla cool aid drinkers have always touted how his "auto pilot" is actually a real auto pilot. They make tons of videos, post them all on YouTube, brag about "look at my car driving itself while I read a book" and Musk just nods and winks about it.

Tesla will issue a bland statement every six or eight months saying something like, "auto pilot still requires the driver be present in the drivers seat to maintain control of the car" but that's about it.

The whole thing is caused by a cult of personality making his driver assists software seem to be a real auto pilot. No other car manufacturer on earth has the problem that Tesla does because no other car maker on earth is arrogant and stupid enough to call it "auto pilot" and then like and retweet videos of people doing stupid shit in their cars.

Elon Musk does that. All the time. So yeah, it's a "because Tesla" thing.
