Naaahhhh, roosters can be assholes, but you don't need them unless it's an "end of the world" scenario and you need to keep making more chickens. Most hens, especially buff orpingtons, are sweet as could be. We're in the boonies and eventually gave up on chickens just because the bears would hop a 6ft chain link fence and eat them. We wanted to eat eggs, but instead all we did was feed the bears. Was kind of a bullshit arrangement for the chickens, so we quit. Someday if we move to an area with fewer predators, we'll have them again.
