Not cheap to run for sure. Power here is over 25¢/kwh so running my 1000W 12 hours/day for flowering is over $90/mth but I only use that when I have a shitload of plants and the payoff is going to make it worth my while. I have a Light Rail 4.0 so I can use that with a 600W, (have 3 digital 600s), and get as good coverage as a 1000W. The rail only uses 9W so saves lots on power and you can run the light closer to the canopy.
My basement grow room is always very cool so if I blew a bunch of money on good LEDs to save a little power my heater would have to be coming on more often to keep my temps up around 75F and any power savings with the LEDs would be going to that. My 6" exhaust fan is on a temp/rh controller and even a 600 doesn't heat up the room enough when it's -25C outside to turn it on. No CO2 for the plants so I burn a little alcohol lamp for extra CO2. Uses about 100ml of methyl hydrate/day but that's cheap CO2 and one 4L jug is only $10 and good for a whole grow. With the 400 going now and only a few smaller plants I light it for an hour twice a day and that's plenty. During the stretch with lots of plants it goes all day while the lights are on.
Not using the Rail here. Just a 600W Hortilux SHPS light for a couple plants. Got a gallon of paint to get rid of the stripes left after removing the shelving that was in there when I bought the place 18 years ago. Next time I have no plants going in there I'll paint it all over.
