There's some good info here:
"Fungus gnat larvae do damage plants. When their preferred food choices run out, they feed on roots, stunting plant growth, causing foliage to yellow and leaves to drop. "
Kind of a circle here. But still over watering in poor soil starts the mess. And larvae continue to eat roots containing mycellium. However it spelled. Not after the roots. And too late by then. WOW.
