Pickles?

Lately I've opened some stored (3 mos. +) flower and the main aroma in all the jars is "dill pickle". The jars were new when filled, the bud's been maintained at 62% and kept in the dark (mostly) - and it smokes perfectly fine, with no pickle smell after grinding.

Is this weird, normal, or hinting at some flaw in my growing or preservation method?

Are you 100% sure the jar or container you're using is clean? I have a handful of Ball jar lids that, for whatever reason, impart a weird peppery smell to my herb. I've since thoroughly cleaned all my lids with alcohol & even threw a couple out (replacement lids are cheap) & no more peppery weed.

This is a great point. You can save and wash the jars and bands, but I recommend replacing the lids whenever you change the contents or use of the jar. They are so cheap that it's a no brainer.

Brand new with lids on. I rinsed and dried them before filling. Same aroma even across 3 strains. It doesn't seem to affect the taste after grinding, just thought I could learn something about "my style" from ya'll's input...

I wouldn't waste your time or mine. Brand new, unused, rinsed Mason jars...

Make sure you rinse them in near boiling water. Sounds like you're a victim of "new jar smell", lol. . .. which, as best I can tell, mostly comes off the lids.

Hell, I'll give them a few seconds in ACTUAL boiling water, lol! Gonna take a few months to see if it makes a difference, but I'll add to the thread then... Thanks!

It's how grandma sanitized them before pickling things don't worry, the jars---and lids---can handle it.

Yeah, I'd want a sterilized container for food. Just didn't think it applied to bud. Maybe it does!

Flip the lid cap, and by the next time you clean the jar any pickle smell should disappear over time exposed to air. I use pickle jars but the lids I use are so old the dill scent is long gone.

Quick tip from someone who actually does canning, home-fermenting, Jam making, pickle making, brewing, etc...

Rinsing for a few seconds isn't going to do fuck all. Standard practice is to boil for ~10 minutes at a full rolling boil. Or if you have a fairly modern dishwasher with a sanitizing cycle that would work. Or you can buy stuff like B-Brite sanitizer to rinse with for this kind of use.

It sounds like there was some unaccounted for moisture and just the right kind of yeasts on your buds and you've had your stuff get fermented.

Yes a ball canning jar you can flip the lid. If cleaned properly the glass shouldn't smell but ime the lid holds scent, so flip it so the metal top part is inside closed jar.

You lose the seal with metal on glass.

I honestly never had this problem when using jars. I did move over to Grove Bags though...Keeping shelves or boxes of jars and dealing with them was way more of a hassle. Groves have taken away all the pain, and for me they store and access easier.

I expect I'll get around to trying them - when all my jars are full, lol! Since the pickle aroma doesn't seem to get into the bud this was more of a curiosity thing, maybe a chance to fine-tune what I'm doing. I'm in the middle of moving & when things settle down I'll empty my jars, boil them & see if the smell returns or not. But I'll keep Grove bags in mind, thanks...
