I'm pretty sure a compact cheap EV would sell very well, the average life of the US vehicle fleet has been increasing and is now at 12 years, better more expensive cars and poorer people are why. Something that could charge to 50 miles range with and internal 120V charger overnight or that can be quick charged would sell well IMO. The right design could be the "Model T" of EVs, if it is cheap enough and fits consumer needs.

I wouldn't buy a Tesla, but if they pull it off it will cause other car makers to react with similar cheap cars.

From what I've seen, there should be an awful lot of new battery factories built and operating over the next 5 years and that has to affect the price with such volume production compared to what we produce now. Also, most of these places are dealing with novel chemistries and improvements are being constantly made. So, over the next decade we should see battery prices steadily drop with volume production, competition and new improved designs. Even if a new kind of cell cost twice as much, if it stores 6 times more energy it will be 3 times cheaper, improvements in capacity and longevity reduce costs too, a long life battery pack will have a high trade in value, if it lives 4 or 5 times longer than the EV it was powering!

That would be great, but at least some of the people we're dealing with have a history of being more than willing to suppress new innovation if it could cost them money...I think i'll wait and see just how much "new tech" changes, and how many times manufacturers are willing to retool.

There are lots of players from lots of countries, so competition on price and performance will be fierce, it's the same with solar panel production. Some kinds of batteries are better for different applications, micro vehicles, cars, trucks and stationary storage, home or utility scale. The next decade should see a large transition in the power industry with more people generating and storing their own power locally. The transition to EVs and heat pumps means a single source of power, electricity, powers the home and transport, so it makes independence possible. If new batteries last 30 or 40 years, some will end up as power banks in homes when they are done in EVs, since nobody will be paying much for daytime solar power and the EV will be at work during the day.

Future EVs could see the electric motors in the hubs of the wheels, there would be not much more to the vehicle drive train other than the electronic power control module and battery. Wheel hub motors can also provide regenerative braking and most of the braking, reducing the need for brake pad replacements.

I would imagine this kind of motor would be suited to electric aviation too we just need the batteries to power it.

Several other car manufacturer groups already announced EVs in a similar price range and I don’t think Elon’s promises and decision to join a cheaper smaller car segment affects that much these days. Sub-25k EVs in that segment are inevitable regardless. It would probably be better for Tesla owners if they focussed more on quality than quantity and sales numbers and stock prices for a while. If they can improve quality to a surprising level to get rid of the bad reputation, all while halving the cost, it could be a huge success.

This will bring prices of EVs down more than anything else, competition and the Chinese want to use the transition to EVs for light vehicles to break into the global auto market. A low-priced compact car is just what the market needs IMO and people with lower incomes need transportation too. The Average age of the US auto fleet is 12 years, and this is a reflection of the affordability of new ICE cars plus improved reliability. However, moving forward increasing numbers of new cars will be EVs and the aging ICE fleet should disappear fairly quickly. Maybe that's why NA automakers are focusing more on the high-end SUV and half tons, they know they couldn't compete when the Chinese hit the low end of the market with sensible cheap commuter EVs. Many could be assembled in America or Mexico from imported Chinese parts as part of the deal, just like the other international car companies do with NA assembly plants.
