Navarro scolds anti-Trump protester after court hearing: ‘Shame on you, ma’am’
Former Trump adviser Peter Navarro argued with an anti-Trump protester on the steps of the federal courthouse in Washington on Wednesday after a judge ruled he can not claim executive privilege as a defense in his contempt of Congress trial.

Navarro attempted to swat away a sign reading “Trump lost” from a protester standing behind while speaking to reporters after the court hearing.

After taking questions for about seven minutes, he turned and engaged with the woman who had been heckling him throughout the exchange with reporters. A Navarro supporter had also stepped behind him and started waving a small American flag in front of the anti-Trump sign.

“This is the problem we have in America. Like, she’s got, ‘Trump Lost,’ and, you know, that’s fine. She’s expressing her point of view,” Navarro said.
“She’s got a megaphone to disrupt. But when it comes time for me to express my view with you, you’ve seen what she’s done. She’s interrupted me while I was speaking. And she won’t even let an American show the American flag.”

“Shame on you, ma’am,” he continued.

Navarro was in court Wednesday arguing that former President Trump had invoked executive privilege that barred him from cooperating with a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee from last year.

He was hoping to use the argument as a defense in his trial, set to start next week, but Judge Amit Mehta called his case “pretty weak sauce” in a pretrial hearing earlier this week and ruled against it Wednesday.

There was no “affirmative evidence” that former President Trump attempted to exert executive privilege, the judge said.

“There was no formal invocation of executive privilege by [Trump] after personal consideration nor authorization to Mr. Navarro to invoke privilege on his behalf,” Mehta said.

Navarro cannot be forced to testify as the committee ceased its work last year, but he can still be held in contempt of Congress, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $100,000 fine.

Georgia’s GOP House Speaker slams push to defund Fani Willis amid hurricane
Georgia’s GOP House Speaker is slamming his colleagues’ efforts to defund Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) amid the ongoing hurricane, suggesting that it could violate the state constitution’s separation of powers clause.

Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns (R) addressed the GOP caucus in a letter Wednesday, hitting back on some Republican members’ push “to defund a duly-elected district attorney of this state and her office in an attempt to interfere with the criminal justice system.” He suggested that the effort to remove a district attorney from office should not take precedence over “human needs” in the state, like the aftereffects of Hurricane Idalia.

“While this real-time crisis unfolds, unfortunately, we continue to have a few members of the General Assembly making misleading or false claims about the General Assembly’s lawful powers regarding an ongoing criminal case before our Judiciary,” he wrote in the letter that was obtained by The Hill. “It is an unfortunate reality of today’s politics that theatrics sometimes garner more attention than genuine human needs like those that will unfold today in south and coastal Georgia.”

He warned that removing funding for the district attorney would also have the “unintended consequence” of prompting delays or preventing prosecutions in serious offenses including murder, rape and armed robbery. He said if members were actually concerned about serious crime in Atlanta, then the move to defund the district attorney would “obviously be harmful to public safety.”

“It is unfortunate some would knowingly suggest such a reckless course of action despite the devastating effects it would have,” he wrote.

He also explained how reducing the pay of an individual district attorney or assistant district attorney would mean reducing the pay of all district attorneys across the state, noting that funds are not provided to individual circuits on an individual basis. Instead, circuits receive funding for one district attorney and an additional assistant district attorney based on the total judge count and other considerations, he said in the letter.

Burns also suggested that taking such action could violate the Georgia Constitution.

“Targeting one specific DA in this manner certainly flaunts the idea of separation of powers, if not outright violates it,” he wrote. “We as members of the General Assembly have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the State of Georgia, these United States and the laws thereof. We trust that our criminal justice system will deal with this matter impartially and fairly, and we will not improperly intercede in this matter in direct contradiction to the oaths we took.”

While the letter does not explicitly mention Willis, a handful of Republican state lawmakers have called for a special session to impeach and remove her or defund her office. Last week, state Sen. Colton Moore, who represents the northwest corner of Georgia, said Willis’s “political persecution” of former President Trump and her behavior following the indictment merits an investigation.

“The Legislature has this great check and balance when it comes to controlling the purse. Ultimately, from what I’ve seen, I think she should completely be defunded of any state dollars. People in northwest Georgia and Georgians all over don’t want their tax dollars going to fund this type of political persecution,” Moore told The Hill earlier this month.

Willis brought an indictment against Trump and 18 other co-defendants earlier this month over their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Since then, some Republicans and Trump’s allies in Washington and Georgia have begun attacking Willis over the indictment.

Greene calls McConnell unfit for office after 2nd freeze-up
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) “not fit for office” after he appeared to freeze up at a podium Wednesday for the second time in recent weeks while taking questions from reporters.

“Severe aging health issues and/or mental health incompetence in our nation’s leaders MUST be addressed,” Greene wrote on Wednesday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. She attached a clip from the incident earlier in the day.

“Biden, McConnell, Feinstein, and Fetterman are examples of people who are not fit for office and it’s time to be serious about it,” Greene continued, comparing McConnell’s freeze-up to what she suggested were health-related conditions affecting President Biden, along with Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) and John Fetterman (Pa.).

Lawmakers have expressed similar health concerns about Feinstein’s mental capabilities, with a small number in her party even calling on her to resign. Fetterman checked himself into a hospital for several weeks to get treatment for clinical depression. He also survived a stroke during his campaign.
Biden is the oldest president in history to be elected to the White House and has acknowledged in interviews that questions about his age are “totally legitimate” but said he’s fully capable of running for reelection. According to the White House, his doctor has given him a clean bill of health.
In a subsequent post, Greene raised the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment, which addresses succession and disability as it applies to the president.

“These politician’s staff and family members should be ashamed of themselves by enabling and allowing their loved ones to remain in office all to hold power. We are talking about our country’s national security and it’s all at stake! 25th amendment and other measures need to be on the table,” she wrote.

Greene’s comments echo some arguments expressed by members of both parties, who have raised concerns about an aging Senate, both in terms of mental acuity and in terms of reflecting the demographics of their constituents. The median age in the U.S. Senate is 65.3 years, according to Pew Research Center.

GOP state lawmaker arrested in Alabama on felony voter fraud charges
Alabama state Rep. David Cole (R) on Tuesday was arrested and charged with voter fraud on accusations he voted in “multiple or unauthorized locations,” according to jail records provided by Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s records, Cole was booked Tuesday afternoon and released on bail amounting to $2,500. The charge is a Class C felony, meaning conviction could result in up to 10 years in prison.

Al.com, a local news outlet, said Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office confirmed he was prosecuting the case.

Additional details of the charges were not immediately available in court records. However, the arrest comes after increased scrutiny over Cole’s primary residence.

Cole was elected to represent District 10 in the Alabama legislature, but local reports claimed Cole actually lived in District 4, which would violate state law. Libertarian candidate Elijah Boyd challenged the election results in court.

In a deposition in May, according to reports, Cole sat for more than two hours answering questions that centered on whether Cole truly lived at the District 10 home listed as his residence.

During the deposition, he said he could not remember whether he had moved any personal property into the home. He also said he could not recall whether he had ever slept at the home overnight and said he could not recall ever eating a meal at the home or bathing there.

Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R) issued a statement Tuesday, according to multiple reports, and said the investigation was ongoing and he was waiting for more details to emerge. He stressed the importance of election integrity.

“In recent years, the Alabama House has prioritized legislation that promotes election integrity, and we believe that any allegation of fraud must be addressed regardless of the party, public official, or candidate involved,” the statement read.
