Does the Northern Lights #5 from the 90’s still exist?

Then its not the same nl5 we all know and love from the 90s as that was nevils more indica cut unless its literally that it aint what everyone is seeking i can guarantee you that
Idk why even call it NL5 then?

Imo releasing it as a new strain different than NL5 or anything else would help save face from all the "this isn't the real NL" backlash that they'd receive.....and when not expecting NL5; maybe ppl would actually like it lol

The name bit is cos $$ I agree if it was actually like the old nl5 i think it be everywhere it might still be nl5 but they should have added the usa part then at least folk would know its different from nevils his was more indica he even said himself there was very little influence in his of the sativa in it the thai/Hawaiian thai or whatever it is the nl crew is claiming these days think last i heard was mexi now who knows cos they changed storys a few times

A lot of the Old School strains (if not all of them) are not the same anymore if not long gone. What's out there now are distant relatives with the same last name. Like Conner said.. all about the M O N E Y

Some u can still get some are gone forever and only exist in namesame its down to can you get the right line with the right parents? cos if not then it now only exists in namesake or in the genepool of older hybrids at best sad but true cannabis aint even the worst i did some time volunteering at a bird of pray sanctuary years back the amount of species we have wiped out or we have got down to the last breeding pair of is sickening and even then folk would still try and steal em cos its $$ same goes with cannabis some folk lack the morals and will do anything to make a buck so they cash in on the names or worse.

What about CSI/Riots NL5?

It's supposed to tie back to the original....does it? Apparently they got it from Seattle Greg if I'm not mistaken
Todd used same stock
I grew out and fgenned the csi/riot release, found some very good representations in first grow and fgens very reminiscent of late 90s nl5 I was getting in Seattle.
Do I believe the story about lost beans in Seattle Greg’s aunt’s fridge? Highly unlikely story, tall tales in cannabis.
The plants do speak for themselves, so I’m happy to have a big bag of these beans and crosses I made. Whatever it is, it certainly took me back to 1997

Hello to everyone im new to the forum but have been following this stuff about NL on mr nice forum and here and its a big debate. Has anyone tried to ise the formula Neville left mr Nice forum to try and recreate the NL line? Of course it wouldn't be EXACTLY the same but maybe ot can be close . Just an idea from an open minded enthusiast.

It would be impossible to recreate at this point some 40 years later now. The plants and seed stock used then are now long gone. All we have left are remnants and fragments of them. Sure, you could use what's left of these lines and do a recreation, but it wouldn't be the same, and how close to the original it might be is difficult to say, but for sure, it would not be the same.

IMO there would be some magic lost because of decades of inbreeding and hybridization that followed those old seed releases.

Agreed unless the parent stock is the same lines and not bottlenecked to hell it is impossible to remake

From what i understand he bred thru observation and logical reasoning so i think if a few top level grower got together something might come out close to it.

Sourcing similar genetics would probably be the biggest limiting factor. Some of these places have laws that are not friendly and don’t allow randoms to just show up and take seeds. Others, the strains used don’t exist in their pure form anymore. You could be a great breeder, but if you’re breeding dachshunds, it’s unlikely that you will breed a mastiff from that same genepool. I’m all for hope, just don't hold your breath.

How does NL take to being S1'd....if you can find the closest to original available and get it to S1...it should reopen the gene pool for selecting close to the original
Yeah it does reverse only Nevils nl5 cut didn't if I remember right

You got to understand as we don't and can't use enough plants as the law stands every generation you replicate it you lose genes unless your running enough plants so even if you got the two parent lines by now there's a good chance it won't be same same there will be some differences also what is nl5 we don't know 100% I know where I'd start if i was trying to redo nl1 but the #5 idk the sativa bit is the hardest bit

Yeah your best bet is to do some hunting through seeds. Either a nice NL5 cross, or one of the various NL5 reproductions. Grow a ton, find and keep the one.

Also mind you, most people's recollection of old school NL or NL5 is probably from Neville's seed stock, unless you were in the know in the pacific northwest US. That's kind of important because it means Neville's selections were really friggin good. He came from a large scale agriculture background I think, so he knew his stuff. That said, I'm not aware of any other NL seed releases of old that anyone speaks of... so as much as we talk about Seattle Greg and whoever else was involved, the truth is Nevil really brought it to the masses, and Nevil's secret sauce was the true magic of the NL lines. The proof is in the goods. I don't know what plants these other people had back in the day, but I do know who brought the goods...

Probably the only other NL seed release that's highly regarded was BSCB's repro of Nevils NL5
