I have felt that since I started paying a little attention to politics. Each election is crazier and crazier, the media spins harder, pretty soon they will be calling each other werewolves or something.

Trump Defense Secretary pick Pete Hegseth proudly boasted of never washing his hands: ‘Germs are not real’
‘Germs are not a real thing.’
Same article:

Hegseth’s remark drew a flurry of headlines and online backlash at the time, prompting him to clarify that he was fully joking.
“It’s ridiculous to me because of how people take literal and serious certain things and their heads explode,” Hegseth told USA Today.
He added that the banter was meant to call out those who obsess over germs.
“My half-hearted commentary to the point is, we live in a society where people walk around with bottles of Purell in their pockets, and they sanitize 19,000 times a day as if that’s going to save their life,” he said. “I take care of myself and all that, but I don’t obsess over everything all the time.”

I'd love for this to be the best administration in the history of the country. I'm not heartened by any of these nominations but I take some solace in the thought that these folks, should they be confirmed, will be so inept and controversial as to be largely inconsequential.

And we only have two years until the inevitable backlash at the midterm.

Then there is a good chance that the party starts eating it's own in a late term power grab.
