The sugars are what add the flavors naturally. The buds are not going to smell like the container of sweet, whether it be berry or the citrus. It will increase the amount of aroma but wont change how it smells. If the plant smells and tastes like lemons, it will have more of a lemony smell and taste even if you use the berry. I have used both on the same strains and the taste was the exact same. It doesn't "impart" a flavor or smell, it allows the plants to make the flavors and smell naturally. If the stuff you put in the water actually put flavor into the buds, think about how terrible organic buds would taste.
I don't think putting a beer in the res would do anything but breed problems. The Flora Nectar is only like $15 for a quart, and you only use like 10ml per gallon. This means that a quart will make like 94gallons at full strength and over 180 at half strength. This is going to cost you more on an initial investment, but in the long run it would be cheaper than adding a beer and you know it wont cause any problems.
