I compost old plant matter (leaves and stalks) with the old soil in my worm boxes, a few weeks later fresh compost.
I use a 55 gal drum and mix in bout half compost, 1/4 peat moss (makes for airy soil) 1/4 fresh potting soil, cheapest i can find.
Been using this technique for all potted plants and its been working great. And i dont spend a fortune for fresh potting soil.
Im not so sure bout that. Check your facts.Peat Moss is anti-microbial. Your Plant's Immunity system suffers, stress, all that shit. If you want referals, I'll see if I can find it. I ordered high dollar peat, then I heard about the facts. I'm learning.

allybam - i got 12-5gal buckets. each bag of soil is about 2.5 buckets per bag. that shit adds up either way. Im considering using nursery organic soil here shortly cause its less than half the price and im amending the ffof anyway!

Too bad it's hard to find in any form other than hobbyist flower-setting stuff.
I had planned on adding in some perlite, worm castings, and dolomite to make a base mix, and then in the goodies for Bongaloid's guano mix (see below).Yeah, rinsing on the screen sounds good. Add compost Tea later, like Garrett Juice, that will neutralize the problems.
Why waste good money on soil? You can make better soil then you can buy. My soil is full of organic goodies and it's still great soil even when it's been used, maybe even better for having been through the cycle of life.buyin gd quility soil is nothing u just bein scruges well unless u have ur own scrap food waste bin n worms ta do it for ye but if not ur just a mizer!!!!!!!!!!
