Beckham limps off field in final game with Real Madrid

Associated Press

MADRID, Spain -- David Beckham was minutes away from a perfect Hollywood ending.
The 32-year-old soccer star-pop icon, who likely played his last game for a European club, was taken off the field moments before Real Madrid rallied to win the Spanish league title for the first time in Beckham's four years with the team.
The England midfielder was replaced in the 66th minute with what appeared to be a recurrence of an ankle injury. But he still managed to limp around the field in celebration -- in front of a huge crowd that included wife Victoria and friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes -- after his team beat Mallorca 3-1 to win its 30th league title.
"I couldn't have dreamt it any better," Beckham said Sunday. "It's been about winning the title for the last six months and we've deserved it tonight."
It was the culmination of a season that can easily be called the most difficult of his life. But even being shunned by both Madrid coach Fabio Capello and England coach Steve McClaren over the last year didn't keep Beckham from proving he still has the skills to compete at the highest level.
"It has been possibly the toughest season of my career on and off the field. I've gone through things that I never thought were possible," said Beckham, who was dropped from the Madrid lineup in January after signing a five-year, $32.5 million contract to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS.
"It's been an incredible experience but all I remember now is the great things. Winning this tonight now puts to bed everything else," said Beckham, who was dropped from the Madrid lineup in January after signing a five-year, $27.5 million contract to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS.
But with Madrid again eliminated early from the Champions League and the team in fourth place in the league -- six points behind leader FC Barcelona -- Capello begrudgingly recalled the former England captain.
"A major fault of mine this season was not recognizing Beckham's potential," Capello said Sunday.
Beckham, whose good looks and pop star wife have made him an international marketing magnet, marked his return to the team by scoring with a bending free kick in Madrid's 2-1 win at Real Sociedad.
After missing six weeks with a knee injury, Beckham returned to set up the winning goal in a 2-1 win over Valencia.
Madrid rode an eight-game unbeaten run by scoring 24 goals -- more than a third of the total it had scored in the first 30 games of the season.
On Sunday, Beckham nearly scored with a free kick in the 18th minute, and then watched as another one went over the crossbar in the 52nd. Six minutes later, Beckham hit the bar with another.
But Beckham appeared to re-aggravate his left ankle sprain and he was replaced by Jose Antonio Reyes, who scored two of Madrid's three goals.
After the game, Beckham did a lap of honor with an England flag draped across his back, soaking in the atmosphere at the famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium for one last time.
Beckham arrived at Madrid in 2003 with nine major trophies from his days at Manchester United. Lining up alongside Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Luis Figo, Beckham was the last "galactico" -- sure to fill the club's pockets with marketing money while the nine-time European champions continued to collect trophies.
But life in Madrid was tough for Beckham. The club went four years without winning a trophy -- its longest drought in 53 years.
A new language, six different coaches and three club presidents during his spell led to incessant criticism that Madrid was not a team, but a collection of players.
"I've gone through things that I never thought were possible," Beckham said. "Things have happened here that never happened at Manchester United. Not being involved in matches or in training and having things said about me that were not true was hard."
Beckham's first season began in promising style, with the Englishman scoring in his first game at the Bernabeu as Madrid won the Spanish Supercup by beating Mallorca.
It turned out to be his only chance before Sunday to take a victory lap at the Bernabeu, despite the club winning three of the previous six Champions League titles and two Spanish league titles before his arrival.
Despite the lack of trophies, the midfielder's determination and fiery temper -- he has picked up 14 cards in 22 games this season, including one red -- saw his standing with the home fans remain steady.
The same can be said of his supporters in England, who enthusiastically welcomed Beckham back to the national team for the European Championship qualifying competition. The former captain responded by setting up two of England's goals in its 3-0 win over Estonia.
"There's no doubt I could have stayed with Real Madrid for two or three more years, or for the rest of my career," Beckham said. "I had to make a decision when I was told I was leaving the club at the end of the season. I've had 15 years playing top flight football for Real Madrid and Manchester United, but I'm moving on to a new challenge."
Instead of playing in front of 90,000 fans at Madrid and Barcelona, Beckham will turn out in front of about 8,000 at some Major League Soccer games, even though his presence will inevitably boost attendance.
"David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," Timothy J. Leiweke, president and CEO of AEG and owner of the Galaxy, said after the signing.
With that in mind, Beckham can depart for America with one challenge accomplished, and ready for the next.

Ignore the pop-icon part at the top. This is from an American site, and what do they know about football, right?

Also Real Madrid tried to scupper the deal with LA Galaxy. They didn't want him to go in the end. The fans were crying and everything.

You may have satellite. Yet Thierry Henry did nothing for Arsenal last season, he's burnt out. They've ran him into the ground. Even with Barca's top fitness team, Henry will only ever be half the player he once was.

Which Ronaldo? Surely not the fat Brazilian?

If you're on about the fat, goofy one then you cannot cpompare players that play in different positions.

If you're on about Christiano, then again these are two different types of players.

Tell me which one you're on about and we can talk some more.

look, in the time when fifa counted, ronaldo the forward, not christian, was dominant for brazil and was really good for real madrid. thierry henry doesn't have to defend himself...he's the michael vick of soccer right now. he's got more talent than anyone, wherever he plays. he and ronaldinho will wrap up the spanish primera and i'd bet on them to win next years ECC.

When fifa counted? The biggest football governing body in the world, and suddenly they don't count? I don't understand, could you explain this better for me, please?

Thierry Henry did almost nothing last season. He's tired, a shadow of the player he once was. Arsenal have sold him at the right time. Barca' may feel they have saviour in Henry, but he'll turn out another ronaldinho (little ronaldo), or ronaldo. Overweight and disinterested in earning their wages.

The two best players in the world at the moment are Kaka and Ronaldo (Christiano). Henry's time has gone.

I imagine that now Real Madrid have lost one of their best players Barca will stand a good chance of winning the primera. The champions cup? No, I'll give the best chances to Man U, Liverpool and AC Milan. Chelsea are in there somewhere but they have a lot of pressure to succeed which I feel often leads to their downfall.

I Agree Skunk Henrys Beat Out, Hes Lost It 2 Sessions Ago He Was The Best About Arsenal Sold Him At The Right Time Tho I Think Should Of Got More Money For Him

Beckham Was Always Shit But He Can Win Big Games For What Ever Team He Play,s For Country Or Club With Pin Point Pass,s And Shot Acc. Theres Not Many Like Him With A Dead Ball ,, Like Michel Owen Shit But Can Win Big Games

Real Madrid Are Sorry They Sold Beckham Now For That Reson Plus The Massive Cash Boost He Gives In Every Area In That Club Sales, Supporters ,kits, The Chinese, Man Utd Were Also Sorry They Sold Him Even Know Alex Fergson Would Not Admite This Real Madrid Leap Froged Man Utd To Become The Richest Club In The World Once They Bought Beckham

Any Club In The World Would Want Beckham For The Fortunes He Brings To The Club The Money The Chinese Will Donate To La Galaxy In A Few Months Will Be More That Wining That Mls League 3 Years In A Row

I hear what you are saying... but Beckham is not exactly there to play football anyway. He's been past his prime since Man U sold him to Real Madrid, the fact that Ferguson picked Ryan Giggs to stay over Beckham shows who he valued the most. Either player had only a couple of years left anyway, and Real would have had either one of them quite happily.

Beckham is there to get people like yourself talking about football. Even if it is in a negative way... Beckham and football are in your head, it's the reason why you couldn't help but respond to this thread.

Actually I never think about him or soccer other then how much I dislike it as I associate it with all the illegal south of the border folks in this country. I just find it funny people are fascinated with him and his ugly fake boobed wife like they matter

what is baseball? A bunch of fat pricks guzzling beer and trying to hit a ball with a bat... they don't even know what the inside of a gym looks like.

We have something called rugby for a contact sport... no massive shoulder pads and thick helmets... just pure brawn. The US play rugby too, but they're shit at that as well as football.

You take our game of football and start playing it with your hands? throwing it around? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. FOOTball, get it?

There are plenty of Americans that don't respond to this thread... why? Because they have no interest in FOOTball...

I've watched the American shit, and it's slow and boring... people don't really get hurt because they have those massive pads on. Pussies.

The brits must like it as if you watched the giants game yesterday you saw wimbeldom stadium ( i know I got it wrong) sold out in under an hour and thats what over 80000 seats and here in the US soccer stadiums are empty.Guess you never played baseball then as your in the gym or running cardio all week then play games in between.120 plus games a season how many soccer games per season in a league?Rugby is a hardcore sport I can get into that one but soccer and cricket well toodles to those.Weird how you say no one in football really gets hurt cuz of the pads. I guess that excludes the 2 players already with smashed vertabra and partial paralyse from head to head hits or the few dozen players who tore their acl and mcl or ripped thier pettellas from the ligaments or I guess the few dozen broken hands, legs and arms.I guess thats not real injuries when bones crush and spine break though.

Baseball is soooo slow and boring. Ball gets pitched, swing and a miss, few piss heads shout abuse, then the same again. I;ve tried watching American football but fuck me, i don't have spare days to waste watchin that stuff. It's far to commercialised. Love the adverts saying that the game is brought to you sponsor free by snickers, dodge and some other crap. But seriously I watched some of your american football in a bar in Canada, had bout 4 drinks in 2 hrs and I thought I was seeing things as the clock on the game had only gone about 3 mins (in 2 hrs).

And as for you saying your american sports dominate our football, i dont think you are really looking outside the box are you. The football world cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, yet you lot still see it as bollox. So maybe it's not the sport of football that shite (as the rest of the world will clarify) but maybe it's you americans that are wrong maybe. Apart from Japan, who really plays any of your sports seriously around the world, but is that so you can call yourself the best in the world as you have no competition. Maybe the rest of the world dont like your sports

Yeah I notice that too... the yanks call everything the world this and that, when they are the only country in the competition. Hilarious. American sports are just like their tv channels, slow and boring. The whole world LOVES football (the real kind where you hit the ball with your feet), except America... they have their own version... lol. One they can win.

I like soccer a lot, but it's no fun to watch the Galaxy because they're a pretty shitty team to begin with, and Beckham doesn't play frequently enough to make it interesting.

I like baseball, but only if I'm with people. It's definitely a social sport for me.
