Stoopid first timer

Wadup all. Started growing for the first time this week and was wondering if i've screwed it up already. We got four plants growing, all greenhouse - Lemon skunk, Cheese, Train Wreck and El nino. We were advised (reliably) to not germinate them before potting them so the seeds went straight into jiffy pots. The problem is that there doesnt seem to be much movement upwards. The cheese and Lemon skunk are looking healthy but it almost seems like we stunted the other two. The seeds move towards the top of the pot but they dont seem to be sprouting.

They are currently under flourescent light and have been for the first 5 days. Maybe they're not getting enough light? (although why would only two out of the four sprout). On wednesday (so after 8 days) they're going under 400w HPS and i think were using biocanna, so hopefully we can start seeing some proper growth.

About three millimetres i think. Not too deep. Just seems like two of them are growing a lot faster than the other two.

its very rare to get two sprouts/plants/seedlings to grow at the same rate.
every seed has different genetics regardless of strain.
(i.e. 2 super skunk seeds will be slightly different).
dont worry about growth rate.
and you should plant the seeds 5-7mm deep and keep them in darkness untill they sprout from the jiffy pellets.when they sprout thats when they get light.
i am glad to hear you did not fuck about with paper towels and soaking seeds as its a waste of time and unreliable.

here is the pics of the gear i use.
one shows the cheap plastic prop with the clear lid(humidity dome).
one shows a dry jiffys and shows how they fit in the prop nicely(room for 20 jiffys).
the pic of the swollen jiffy shows you how i prep them soak them in warm water untill fully soaked then just squeeze the excess water out and shape it how it looks in the pic.
and one pic just shows what kind of weight you want the jiffy to be once prepped.
if i am planting maybe 10 seeds then i will weigh each jiffy to 38g to give consistency with the moisture level you can give them a light misting of water after 12 hrs and that will do untill they sprout.
once this is done just make a small 5mm deep hole in the top of your prepped jiffys and just simply drop the seeds in there holes straight out the packet cover them slightly with some peat from the jiffy put them in the prop put the lid on and keep in a drawer in TOTAL DARKNESS make sure the temps are 21-23* and you are most definately going to get 100% germ rate within 70-85 hrs.
i have done over 60+ seeds for various people just to get their sprouts started and never had one not sprout.as soon as you see the peat cracking at the top of the pellet and life coming(any whiteness from the embrio/seed)then remove them from the dark and start your 18/6. NO LIGHT UNTILL THEN ONLY A QUICK CHECK ON PROGRESS.
i may do 6 seeds shortly for a friend and when i do i will show you the sprout as it cracks the jiffy surface.

Straight in the soil works the best in my opinion, so no you didn't hurt them. I didn't like the results I had with jiffy pots so I just put them in a pot with potting soil, I think the jiffy pots dry out too fast or get overwatered too easily. Paper towel method just seems like the seeds get handled too much and the paper towel dries out also if you don't keep an eye on it. Don't look at things as mistakes, consider them experience, you will never get everything right the first time but by the third time you should be rolling along pretty smoothly. I think the first time you just worry about too many little things because it is all new.

Repped you for this post mate, very good thing to know for a new grower like myself. You can't go wrong with lighting but you can go wrong with the germination process.

I put my container on-top of a heating pad and that seemed to help alot. my mistake was labeling. i wrote on the cover above each little cricle what the seed was. then my friend came over, placed the cover on the counter, then forgot which way it was suppost to go. so now I have 11 mystery plants. now i know better. next grow, LABEL!!

Yeah i think you´re right. Becoming the overprotective parent. Thanks for the advice!

We´ve lost the labels too. Mystery plants are exciting though, I hope.
