Was just curious to know what everyone works as on this website. I've just had a nice two weeks holiday off work and basically all I've done is sit about getting high and relised something.
I like my job because I get along with everyone but all I do all day is pack and load boxes. I've thought to myself do I really want to do this for the rest of my life. I was thinking of studying something at college or trying to set some kind of business up on my own but I dont really have many ideas. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and what there experiences have been

I'm a part-time clothing guy. Had a lot of them [jobs]. But I'm in college now. Starting your own business? I haven't put this one if effect yet, but it's my plan. Erecting small [relative to the big ones, actually still quite fucking huge] electric windmills. I'd do some research into that. It's a profitable investment, not a purchase, for your customer, and they shouldn't go out of style. In fact, they are just picking up. It's a recession, now is the time to go to college, so you can get out of college during the economic upswing, and get hired quick, or start your business quick.

Solid advice, I was a fibrous plasterer and am now between jobs, I think I'm going to go for an alternative job next..

I would have to disagree with this advice. Going to college and racking up 30k+ in loans during an economic collapse is not a bright idea. I have friends who have degrees that can't find any work. Yes, some of them had useless degrees but others have useful degrees but the job market is still going down the toilet. I have 2.5 years of school under me but I have 0 plans to go back anytime soon.

Currently I work in the IT department of a major trucking company headquarters that is 1 billion in debt and they have been laying off 500+ sales reps a month. I only have certifications and make a decent living. I'm considering going to trade school in the fall for a 32 week course for HVAC certification. I just like to keep different options open. My advice would be to find something you enjoy doing and has a practical future need (Engineering/skilled trades/etc) because the days of interior designers/fashion experts/etc are over.

I only say this because there is not going to be an economic "upswing." We have accumulated so much debt that it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to climb out of it. Pass me the Optimistic Opium Mr. Parker.

Optomistic? I'm not anywhere near, I'm just objectively saying that it's going up and down, and will forever. We're down now, gonna go back up eventually right? Remember 1929? I remember that life was pretty good before 9/11... It'll come back.

Well thanks for the truth :hump:
Don't speak to me bro, your a joke.

[BTW I lived in a town called Butava near Moscow for 13 months, Breda in Holland and Thomasville Tennesee where I worked in a disused Calvin Klein depot, I worked for a company called Seaway Freight Services Ltd., just because your life isn't worth living doesn't mean everyone else's isn't.]

Goodbye.

I hope you aren't trying to correct my spelling of optimistic. No, I do not remember 1929 because I wasn't born yet. If you are referring to the "Great Depression" then yes I am aware of the economic hardships of those times AND am well aware of how we got there in the first place. I'm not here to hijack this young mans thread on career advice so I will stop getting into economic/political issues. If you would like an explanation of things start a thread and I will gladly give you some input.

Sorry Pylon89, I did not notice you were from the UK when I posted. I guess the holiday should have clued me in. I do not know how the University education system works over there nor the cost.

It wasn't about spelling, my post.

There are a whole load of pretty good options for further or higher education in the UK. If you're Scottish, and study in Scotland, it's free (the Scottish Govt will pay the fees, ur student loan for living costs you'll have to pay back though). If you're from any of the other countries in the UK you're gonna rack up a fair bit of debt but they don't make you repay it til you're earning enough to be able to afford to (i think).

I went off to uni to do a really vocational course straight after i left school but it was totally shit and i dropped out after a couple of years, worked for a year or two and am now back studying at a totally different uni doing totally different subjects. It was definitely the right thing for me to start again, and a few people i know have done the same kinda thing, but i'd say you want to be sure about the course and the place u're doing it before you take the plunge.

That said, if you've got even a slight inkling of where or what you want to study, it's dead easy to get the info about what courses involve and all that.

First thing i'd say you need to decide is whether you're thinking of doing a full on degree at a university, or a more practical HND/HNC/NQ/whatever at a college. Or, if it's just a little course you're after, you can apply for an Independent Learning Account and do night classes or something.

Good luck mate, and Peter Parker's right about this being a good time to study - you're off the hook for taxes (apart from NI) as long as u're a student and you can get a loan sorted for zero - minimal interest, plus banking perks like interest free overdrafts and blah blah. Then when you're finished the course the economy will have hit the bottom and started to recover again = employment opportunities aw yeah.

Thanks for the advice people. I'm 21 at the minute and was thinking of going to college/uni to do an english degree and maybe become a teacher. This is going to take me up till I'm about 25/26 and I dont know if I would have the dedication to do that. I mean its a long time and what if I decide to drop out half way threw, it would just be a waste. I think I need to have a good think about this lol
