what will the sand do?
apparently the silica granules are sharper edged than most insects prefer. i have used this method in a pinch and it did very little to stop them. no matter how gently you water there is always a small amount of soil and perlite that will push to the top as the sand settles and in a few waterings the gnats have new homes on white sand beaches.
pyrethrin is what i now use and gnats are not an issue anymore.

should i wait longer between waterings and let the soil dry more?
i would. not only should it reduce the amount of gnats it would also "temper" your girls and get them healthy and strong, rather than bloated and inefficient.

what cause these nats
i got mine FREE with the purchase of one bag of Miracle Grow Organic Choice Compost.
