When To Leave The Stage

The Wallstreet Journal Friday Section asks- Is it time for Bob Dylan to hang up his hat and harmonica?

I vote most definitely. YES.

And I think Neil Young should go too.

Any others that need to go.

I don't really understand WHY they need to go exactly??!! Please elaborate.....

I mean, if they still love playing music, and people still want to hear it, then why would they retire??

Do you mean, they should stop playing concert's or all just stop playing outright??

But yeah, as long as the desire is still there why should they stop?
Johnny Cash played until his deathbed and his last few songs (although very different in style to the rest of his music) were very poetic and well produced.

Katie Perry, Kesha, and Lady Gaga all need to retire.

I could happily live the rest of my life without hearing another of their songs.

But yeah, I agree, the classics need to learn when to call it quits too.

Hahaha for sure, Justin Beiber should also retire.

I dunno man, it's a tricky one, I mean these guy's have played their entire lives you know, it is probably a hard descision to make for them.

ACDC should deffinately NOT stop playing! They are gonna play at Rock 'n Rio next year and I'll be there with bells on!! Those guy's still know how to rock man! Went to a Motorhead concert last year aswell, fucking awesome.

I think as long as they are able to sing/play, why not enjoy it while it lasts? Seriously, from what I've seen come out in the last 2 years, I hope that these classic's never die. I never want to hav to resort to listening to fucking Coldplay or god damn Justin Beiber, man I hate that guy!

Can find the online link but here is what WSJ said.

Last Friday night, Bob Dylan chugged through "Highway 61 Revisited" at the Borgata, an Atlantic City, N.J., casino. His always-raspy voice, now deteriorated to a laryngitic croak, echoed through the no-frills ballroom. Security guards wandered the seated audience, enforcing his no-cameras policy. Behind some empty rows in the rear, a handful of dancers shimmied mildly. A trickle of people peeled off for the exit, descending an escalator into the ringing rows of slot machines. One of the walkouts, 50-year-old Warner Christy, said he wouldn't be paying to see the singer again: "I've been scared straight."

For people of influence in any walk of life, from corporate leaders to sports stars, the question of when to leave the stage is a crucial one. Do you go out at the top of your game, giving up any shot at further glory? Or do you dig in until the end, at the risk of tarnishing a distinguished career? For the many and passionate fans of Bob Dylan these are questions that loom large. After 50 years in music, his place in the pantheon is unassailable. He is the age's iconic singer-songwriter and rock's poet laureate—a title even he lays claim to in the introduction read aloud before his concerts. And unlike other artists of the '60s who've been trading on nostalgia since the '70s, he has continued to release new material and wrestle with his art form...

Such are the consolations for fans who have seen one of music's best talents at his worst. The issue of whether Mr. Dylan should pack it in has been an enduring parlor game in music circles, whether part of the punk generation's attack on hippie dinosaurs, or the dismay of those hippie dinosaurs over their hero's notoriously dismal output in the '80s. Now, however, Mr. Dylan's detractors question whether he—at age 69 and having just wrapped yet another tour—is capable of another turnaround.

Seems a touch mad to get rid of the only talent we still have knowing full well that the current generation of performers is well, utter and total shite.

That's what I mean though man, maybe for you they have los their flair you know. Butas long as people are paying for tickets to go see them play and enjoying it, I don't see any reason for them to stop.
I guess when I said it must be a hard choice, I meant that, that is their life man, it is a totally different lifestyle to what any of us can imagine, and ACDC is one of the many bands that when through the thick of what is known as sex, drugs and rock 'n roll.

They do make shitloads, million's infact every tour they do. But I doubt it's the money for them anymore, as you said, they have more tha enough, I deffinately believe it is for the fans, wont be long till they're done though.......

Exactly, let's try and apreciate what we have, while we have it. The crap that this gen is putting out is just horrible.

i love lady gaga! But seriously acdc hands down, most overrated band ever.
I guess Gaga's not so bad, I like her stuff too. Can't believe I missed Beiber in that list.

Just can't stand only five artists on the radio now-a-days. What happened to all the diversity?
