They should keep playing for as long as they can, I've had some of the best experiences of my life listening to these bands, they are gods of the music world and if you don't believe this you have never experimented with any hallucinogenic.

You are comparing two different bands here man, the Cliff Burton day's were undisputably the best Metallica day's ever!
The Ecstasy of gold was originally an opener for the S&M concert wasn't it?! I mean, when the S&M concert opened with this it was pretty fucking cool! But as a stand alone song it's deffinately average, I agree.
But these guy's have stood the test of time, which is a lot to say about any band. I love Metallica, always have, and although their new material isn't as innovative as what thier old stuff was, I will defend them to the DEATH!!! Hahahahahaha!
at least we all know they won't be playing nearly as long as AC/DC, mighty zep, and many others.
