I'm not a pilot but I've tried a few flight simulators including FSX and I just can't get used to the controls lol....I mean on some of them the controls are so authentic you almost have to be real licensed pilot to really get into the game.

there's no missions. but there's checklists and stuff that you're supposed to go through during start-up, taxi, take-off, climb-out, cruising, descent, approach and landing...... it can be pretty fun if you start messing with the malfunctions, fires, etc.... you can set them to go off randomly during flight....

i'm no pilot, i have 3 lessons, about 13 hrs.

looks like the game really is that boring.... fuckit...i like it....

fsx is pretty good. add on the ultimate traffic + military traffic add-ons and it's pretty inmersive... you do need a good rig tho...

I used to play FS95. I really liked Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 2. It was WW2 in the Pacific theater. I haven't played one in a long time though.

Heh, i remember those old combat sims, that was when we got our first computer, me brothers combined their computer time to play fifa together for 40 minutes then i got 20 minutes to play flying games and a rally demo i had. Ah the joys of strict parents :D Quite random but there appears to be a columbian girl coughing to death in my kitchen, not sure what that's about but i'll smoke on through it.

yea I would probably get into it also if I have a little bit of real pilot training I guess. don't have to worry about me wrecking the plane though, on some of them I couldn't even figure out how to turn on the engines.

Isn't there supposed to be a new microsoft sim out soon? Microsoft Flight ? you know anything about that one?

i have. a lot of simmers i know are kind of hating on it b/c of some complicated shit... i have nothing else to do right no so here goes:

microsoft formed a team since FS started. ACIS or something like that. that team had made every single MSFS game out there. then microsoft announced it was eliminating ACIS from it's business model, and supposedly announced that FSX was the last flight simulator coming out.... then there was huge backlash among the FS community b/c there's only two sims out there that are feasible for home-simmers. FSX and X-Plane. X-plane uses a different flight model, and is highly customizable. but it doesn't give you the nice startup screen FS gives you and you have to spend hours customizing it in order to get it to work right. microsoft's simulator is pretty much ready to fly out of the box. and it's very easy to just plug in almost every conceivable joystick and it detects the buttons and assigns commands by itself...

so basically it's more user-friendly. the Microsoft one.

so after they pulled the plug and had a backlash (a while back now), microsoft still did away with the studio (ACIS or something of t he sort) but kept the plans to make a simulator. they began the whole microsoft live integration with PC's, Xboxes, etc... they are going to release microsoft flight, dropping the simulator name to make it more appealing to casual flyers (even though their market position is that they are the standard simulation software for home simmers anywhere). the game will also require an X-box live acct to play online. currently you can play online with a GameSpy ID. microsoft still swears to keep much of the stuff that makes this game a simulator: The ability to make your own flight plans, control realism, realistic flight model, payload and fuel level controls, ILS needles where they are, almost every airport in the world in relatively correct geographical locations, and geological features like oceans mountains vegetation buildings landmarks; and most importantly the FREE FLIGHT.

a lot of ppl are saying this is going to be a 'game', not a simulator... you know the hardcore guys... i still consider this a game... some of the guys i know that fly online get offended every time i say they're playing a game...

anyways i've build motion simulators n shit. i'm gonna build one based (2DofF)off the same mechanics that make a universal joint work.

Thanks for that info. I'm thinking of installing this new flight game when it comes out and dedicating a little more time to learn more about the actual flight controls this time. I have a cheap Saitek flight stick which makes it a little easier, but those landings can be a nightmare when you are really trying to keep it realistic. Not to mention all the other stuff that goes along with real flying like reading maps and knowing how to get to certain airports once you are in the air. I can understand your friends that do not like to refer to it as a game because it really does take a higher level of skill then a casual gamer to really know what your doing.

that's why there's checklists. FSX has simple checklists (not for real flight) that can be printed out and kept handy. An example of a checklist is:

and it's practice really. once you fly an airplane enough times you know the N1 (jet engine's "RPMs" measured in a Percent) that you set the throttle to to keep a steady approach. you know how many times to adjust trim before take-off...... make sure you have a nice rig. i'm talking about 3.0+ghz, 4+gb RAM, fast hard drive......

i wish i would've lived waaay back when the skies were friendly, i'd build a zeppelin and tether myself somewhere 500 feet above the ground...

here's a screenshot from the game, see if it sparks up some conversation....innsbruck, Austria...

i use Real Environment Extreme 2.0.

i don't have the traffic installed yet but the default one pulled through and placed one on approach (lucky me), which i can see out the cockpit on the left....

I'm here!

I started using Flight Simulator back in '93 as a little kid, it's certainly what kept me focused on the real world flying and even nowadays I am always using the simulator. I have both FS2004 and FSX, but I prefer FS2004 as it simply runs much better on my computer.

It's great for fun, and great once you get your pilots license to keep current with not only flying an aircraft, but also using the instruments in the cockpit. I've shelled out way over $5,000USD during my 17 year simming career, from add-on airports and aircraft to the hardware like a yoke and set of rudder pedals.

Another great thing is the online aspect of it, I started with SATCO back in 1997, nowadays it's called VATSIM. Essentially there are the pilots and the controllers (who have advanced software extremely similar to what the RW controllers use) and so you can fly from point A to point B sometimes with full Air Traffic Control. This is great as there have been many changes in the RW regarding aviation phraseology and these changes have also been reflected on VATSIM, so it keeps your communication skills sharp as well!

If you need any help at all regarding adding things to the simulator, feel free to PM me!

Here's a few shots of my own!

finally.... what would you call the top 4-5 add ons...??

i'm looking for a good add-on DC 10...

some more pics. the last two showcase the Saltwater Reef engine. this theme is Great Barrier as viewed when flying in the Bahamas.

the first pic is Courchevel in France. Notice the sloped runway. this is the airport from Goldeneye, or whatever the james bond movie with the sloped runway in the beginning....

My top addon's... hmmm!

Well the aircraft I use mostly are the PMDG MD-11, and 747. The LSH Maddog 2008, and the Level-D 767, all of which are available for both FS2004 and FSX.

As for must haves, OrbX NA Blue scenery packages (www.fullterrain.com), Real Environment Extreme, Ground Environment, Ultimate Terrain, and of course, the World of AI packages, and MAIW packages as well.

I use Flight Simulator to simulate, so I tend to stay away from freeware aircraft (although I have many) usually, and go for the payware aircraft that are highly complex...

Now, as for your DC-10... I suggest waiting for this: http://www.xsimulate.net/products/DC10/index.html

i've got a while to go to finish customizing my FSX. i don't want to give up FPS though... a lot of traffic packages drains performance... you think the world of AI packages drains the FPS or not??
