The Supreme Court has just found for the Westboro Church, and their right to picket military funerals. The decision was nearly unanimous, 8-1. Speaking for the majority, Chief Justice Roberts wrote in the decision:
"Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and -- as it did here -- inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker."
I detest what Westboro does. However, I think the court decided correctly. In the eyes of the law, Westboro has the right to protest. However, I believe they will be dealt with. Westboro will piss off the wrong people at some point, and they will get hit, that's my prediction. I hope it comes to pass.
